What is a Senior Embedded Software Engineer?

A Senior Embedded Software Engineer is an experienced professional who designs, develops, tests, and maintains software that runs on embedded systems—specialized computing devices that are not traditional computers, such as automotive control systems, medical devices, or consumer electronics. They often work closely with hardware engineers to ensure software integrates seamlessly with hardware components. Senior engineers typically lead projects, mentor junior staff, and contribute to system architecture and design decisions. Their expertise includes programming languages like C or C++, real-time operating systems, and debugging tools specialized for embedded environments.

What is the difference between Senior Embedded Software Engineer vs Embedded Software Engineer?

AspectSenior Embedded Software EngineerEmbedded Software Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's/Master's in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field; experience in embedded systemsBachelor's degree in relevant field; entry-level to mid-level experience
Work EnvironmentDesigning, developing, testing embedded systems for hardware productsDeveloping firmware and software for embedded devices, often under supervision
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, automotive, aerospace, consumer electronicsSimilar industries, often as part of product development teams

The main difference between a Senior Embedded Software Engineer and an Embedded Software Engineer lies in experience and responsibility. Senior engineers typically have more expertise, lead projects, and mentor junior staff, while embedded software engineers focus on developing and testing embedded code. Both roles require similar technical skills and industry knowledge, but senior roles involve greater leadership and strategic input.

What are some common challenges Senior Embedded Software Engineers face when integrating software with new hardware platforms?

Senior Embedded Software Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring software compatibility with diverse hardware architectures, optimizing for limited memory or processing power, and debugging hardware-software interactions. These engineers must frequently collaborate with hardware teams to resolve timing issues, manage device drivers, and ensure reliable system performance. Successfully navigating these challenges requires strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and a deep understanding of both hardware constraints and software design.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Embedded Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Embedded Software Engineer, you need deep expertise in embedded C/C++ programming, real-time operating systems (RTOS), and a strong background in computer engineering or a related field. Familiarity with hardware debugging tools (such as oscilloscopes and logic analyzers), version control systems (like Git), and relevant certifications (e.g., ARM Accredited Engineer) is typically required. Exceptional problem-solving, communication, and project leadership skills help you collaborate effectively and mentor junior engineers. These competencies ensure the creation of robust, efficient, and reliable embedded systems critical for product success.

Job description

At Ubiety Technologies, Inc we are redefining physical security. We develop innovative device detection and RF signaling products that protect homes, businesses, and communities. As part of our fast-paced, highly collaborative startup team, you'll work alongside world-class engineers and creative designers to invent and deliver transformative products from inception to production.

We are seeking a Senior Embedded Software Engineer to design, develop, test, and support our next generation of connected device solutions. This role is the critical link across our hardware, firmware, and cloud-connected platforms. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to build highly reliable, low-latency, and secure IoT products that handle high-velocity edge environments. If you thrive on the challenge of full-lifecycle product development—from initial board bring-up to fleet-scale cloud integration—this role is for you.

Key ResponsibilitiesAs a core member of the Embedded Team, you will:

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain firmware for embedded systems and IoT devices.
  • Develop software for microcontrollers, sensors, communication modules, single board computers, board support packages (BSP), and connected hardware platforms.
  • Supporting the full product development lifecycle, including concept, design, prototyping, validation, production, and post-launch support.
  • Implement communication protocols such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Zigbee, cellular, LoRaWAN, MQTT, CAN, SPI, I2C, UART, or similar technologies.
  • Collaborate with hardware engineers on board bring-up, debugging, schematic review, peripheral integration, and system validation.
  • Support device security, firmware updates, data integrity, and secure communication requirements.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, design specifications, test plans, and engineering records.
  • Participate in design reviews, code reviews, risk assessments, and continuous improvement efforts.

Technical Skills & Requirements

  • Experience: 5+ years of experience in embedded systems, firmware development, or IoT engineering. A Bachelor’s or Advanced degree in EE, CE, CS, or a related field is preferred (or equivalent practical experience).
  • Languages & Environments: Proficiency in C, C++, and Python. Solid experience with bare-metal development, RTOS, and embedded Linux (BSP, device drivers, kernel configuration).
  • Protocols & Connectivity: Deep familiarity with wireless and wired stacks (BLE, Wi-Fi, MQTT, cellular, LoRaWAN, Zigbee, CAN, SPI, I2C, UART).
  • Modern Tools & Infrastructure: Experience with AWS IoT fleet management, observability tooling (OpenTelemetry), and automated testing/deployment via CI/CD pipelines (GitLab Runners).
  • Hardware Tooling: Comfortable using debugging tools like oscilloscopes and logic analyzers to run root-cause analysis on complex physical/digital issues.

Key Success Metrics

  • System Health & Reliability: Ensure optimal performance, maintainability, and quality of firmware to minimize field defects and recurring technical failures.
  • Milestone Delivery: Timely execution of embedded software and IoT engineering goals through excellent cross-functional collaboration.
  • Operational Observability: Successful integration of telemetry and monitoring to maintain insight into large connected device fleets.

About Our Process

We know your time is valuable and we treat it as an investment. We consider the interview process to be a mutual evaluation. If your resume is a match, we'll reach out to schedule a brief 30-minute initial conversation. To ensure both sides get the depth they need without wasting time, our advanced rounds are highly focused: you'll deep-dive with the hiring manager, meet a panel of your engineering peers, and connect directly with our CTO and CEO to discuss the company's long-term vision.

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary tailored to your experience and impact.
  • Equity Awards: We believe strongly that if you contribute to Ubiety’s value, you should share in that reward.
  • An environment that prioritizes and values creativity and innovation!
  • Competitive benefits including: medical, dental, vision, 401(k), and PTO.
