Job description

THOR Solutions is actively seeking a highly motivated Senior-Level Marine Electronics Engineer with experience in Exterior Communications to support the United States Coast Guard (USCG)'s Ship Design Team in Washington, DC. An ideal candidate will have prior experience with US Coast Guard or Navy shipboard exterior communications systems development and integration.
Typical Responsibilities:
  • Conduct design of electric and electronic systems, study power generation and distribution, centralized machinery monitoring and control.
  • Apply knowledge of and experience with engineering principles and techniques, to develop and evaluate moderately complex technical reports related to application of C5I systems onboard USCG ships.
  • Review and evaluate the effect of new and/or modified electronics on overall system performance.
  • Review and adjudicate system design specifications, test requirements, Departures from Specification (DFS's), Request for Waiver (RFW), Engineering Changes (EC's).
Location: Hybrid work schedule: Usually 3 days onsite/2 days remote each week at USCG Headquarters in Washington, DC.
Travel:Up to 10% travel to CONUS locations is anticipated for ship checks.
Typical Physical Activity: Primarily desk/computer work in an office environment. May involve: repetitive motion. Periodic visits to waterfront/shipboard environments. May involve: traversing shipboard environments (e.g., confined spaces, ladders, hatches) or vision.
Typical Pay Range: The anticipated pay range for this position in the identified location(s) is $110,000 - 140,000. Actual compensation offered will be based upon individual factors including education, qualifications, and experience.
Eligibility for a SECRET Security Clearance is Required: This position requires eligibility for a Secret security clearance, to be obtained after hire. Only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance; therefore, only current U.S. citizens will be considered for this position.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Bachelor's degree in System Architecture, Electronics, Marine Engineering, or another relevant technical, engineering, or a marine discipline from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • At least eight (8) years of recent, relevant professional experience with developing and integrating systems involving electromagnetic energy transmission for purposes including sensor processing, remote sensing, communications, guidance and control, information processing, navigation and defense applications.
  • Overall experience should also include:
    • At least five (5) years of experience in at least 1 (Three Preferred) of the following categories of C5I systems: Cybersecurity, Command and Control, Navigation, Internal Communications, External Communications, Sensors, Combat Systems, or Intelligence Systems.
    • At least one (1) year of experience related to federal ship or boat building acquisition programs.
  • Familiarity with USN, USCG, ABS and/or commercial ship design rules and regulations.
  • Proficient with common productivity software.
  • Strong communication skills.

Additional Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Master's degree.
  • Prior experience with DoD ACAT I or DHS Level I shipbuilding programs.
  • Previous experience with shipboard and defense C5I systems.
  • Meets DoD IAT Level II Baseline Certification requirements. This can be met by holding any ONE active certification from the following list:
    • CCNA Security
    • CySA+
    • GICSP
    • GSEC
    • Security+ CE
    • SSCP
    • CASP CE
    • Security-X CE
    • CCNP Security
    • CISA
    • CISSP (or Associate)
    • GCED
    • GCIH
