Position Overview

The Sr. Electrical Design Engineer is responsible for electrical design of next generation high reliability undersea and terminal based network elements for SubCom.  The principal job activity provides novel circuit designs, including analog and digital circuits that may involve microcontrollers and FPGAs, as well as other electro-optic components like photo diodes, modulators, EDFAs, VOAs and lasers.  This job function works within a team of outstanding electrical, mechanical, optical, firmware, and reliability engineers to design, prototype, qualify and transfer to production various high reliability fault tolerant circuit boards that will operate within SubCom Terminal or Undersea equipment.  

Responsibilities

  • Conducts analog and digital circuit design and simulation
  • Selects suitable electrical circuit components and helps maintain component libraries
  • Interacts with key component suppliers, distributors, and application engineers
  • Collaborates with PCBA CAD designers to generate PCBA design files
  • Leads and participates in design and requirements reviews
  • Plans, documents, and executes the design verification testing for new products
  • Leads hands-on experimental work on prototype components, circuits, and assemblies
  • Develops GUI based test software tools for testing new circuit boards and components
  • Provides firmware requirements and supports integration testing of firmware on new circuit assemblies
  • Delivers factory testing requirements and supports early factory testing efforts
  • Initiates and develops relationships with internal partners and external suppliers.
  • Consistently ensures that business is always conducted with integrity and behaviors that align with SubCom policies, procedures, and core values.

Qualifications

  • Strong design and analytical skills and willingness to tackle challenging assignments
  • Experience with product realization processes
  • Experience with design of analog and digital circuits and circuit simulation
  • Experience with design of power circuits and use of DC/DC converters, fuses, soft-start circuits, low-noise design techniques and by-pass filtering
  • Experience with circuit techniques that will pass environmental, safety, EMI and EMC testing
  • Experience with op-amp and transistor circuits for detection/amplification/filtering of <1GHz) signals
  • Experience with analog and digital control loops, DACs, ADCs, logic devices processors, and use of I2C, SPI, RS-232 buses
  • Experience with transimpedance and log amp circuits for use with photodiode detection of optical signals
  • Experience with CAD tools and standard methods for design of printed circuit board assemblies
  • Experience with PCB vendors and PCB fabrication and assembly processes
  • Experience with selection of circuit board components based on reliability, availability, cost, performance
  • Strong troubleshooting, experimental and laboratory skills working with circuit board prototypes, electrical components, electrical circuit test instruments and measurement techniques
  • Experience with design of experiments, evaluating circuit performance, analyzing data
  • Experience with writing firmware requirements and integrating firmware into new circuit assembly
  • Experience with CVI or other software for creating GUIs to help with DVT and firmware integration
  • Experience with developing test procedures and writing Manufacturing Testing Requirements
  • Experience with writing firmware requirements and leading firmware integration testing
  • Strong technical presentation and writing skills
  • Experience with leading peer design and DFMEA reviews
  • Familiarity with OrCad, Labview, Spice/Pspice, C/C++, Python
  • Familiarity of fiber optic components such as couplers, WDMs, filters, photodiodes, lasers, modulators, edfas is a plus.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Articulates thoughts and ideas clearly, concisely, and persuasively.  Writes English well.
  • Master’s degree in Engineering/Physics or equivalent experience required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience required.
  • A self-starter with the demonstrated ability to take initiative, who can proactively identify issues/opportunities and recommend actions
  • Strong results orientation with a proven track record of flawless execution and strong attention to detail
