Senior Electrical Engineer Mining information

What does a senior electrical engineer do in the mining industry?

A Senior Electrical Engineer in the mining industry is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining electrical systems critical to mining operations. This includes overseeing power distribution, automation systems, and ensuring equipment complies with safety and regulatory standards. They often lead teams, manage projects, troubleshoot complex issues, and work closely with other engineering disciplines to optimize efficiency and reliability of mining processes. Their expertise helps minimize downtime, reduce operational costs, and ensure safe working environments.

What are some typical challenges senior electrical engineers face when working in the mining industry?

Senior Electrical Engineers in mining often encounter challenges such as adapting to remote and rugged work environments, ensuring compliance with strict safety standards, and managing the reliability of critical electrical systems under harsh operating conditions. They are frequently tasked with overseeing large-scale projects, coordinating multidisciplinary teams, and implementing innovative solutions to optimize energy use and maintain equipment. Effective communication and problem-solving skills are essential, as the role often involves collaborating with operations, maintenance, and management to ensure that electrical systems support overall mine productivity.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior electrical engineer in mining, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Electrical Engineer in Mining, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, mine infrastructure design, and regulatory compliance, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree and professional registration (such as P.E. or CPEng). Proficiency with CAD software, power system analysis tools, and familiarity with mining-specific standards and systems is important. Strong project management, leadership, and effective communication skills help in coordinating multidisciplinary teams and managing complex projects. These competencies ensure safe, efficient, and compliant electrical systems that support mining operations and business objectives.

What is the difference between Senior Electrical Engineer Mining vs Electrical Engineer Mining?

AspectSenior Electrical Engineer MiningElectrical Engineer Mining
QualificationsBachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, often with 5+ years experience, professional licensure preferredBachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, entry to mid-level experience
Work EnvironmentProject management, design oversight, team leadership in mining operationsDesign, testing, and maintenance of electrical systems in mining sites
ResponsibilitiesLeading projects, mentoring junior engineers, ensuring complianceExecuting electrical system installations, troubleshooting, and routine maintenance

The main difference between a Senior Electrical Engineer Mining and an Electrical Engineer Mining lies in experience, leadership responsibilities, and project scope. Senior Electrical Engineers typically oversee projects and mentor teams, while Electrical Engineers focus on technical tasks and system implementation. Both roles require relevant electrical engineering credentials and industry experience, but senior roles demand more leadership and project management skills.

Core responsibilities include the identification of system hardware and software components and evaluating inputs/outputs for sufficient performance of design as specified by the product requirements. The Senior Electrical Engineer follows the NPI Process from the concept stage in developing design requirements by assessing architecture and system design options through product launch in defining verification and validation test procedures. Projects supported reside within Generac's Consumer Power Business Unit including home standby generators, clean solutions, hybrid architectures and power management solutions based on business priorities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop technical skills in Generac's mobile power generation and conversion architecture and serve as an internal expert.

  • Apply engineering knowledge and experience to improve systems, products, and/or processes.

  • Perform root cause analysis and develop solutions for issues identified during the development process, testing, manufacturing process, and/or field.

  • Develop and implement design modifications to support the launch of new product features, harden products, reduce cost, or improve manufacturability.

  • Support the development of product design requirements, test plans, test procedures, and test reports.

  • Develop Risk Assessments, FMEA/DFMEA's, and provide recommendations during Design Reviews.

  • Drive the resolution of technical issues and escalate significant issues to engineering leadership.

  • Support new technology and product development plans (schedule, product cost, meeting design inputs).

  • Conduct electrical simulations and analysis to evaluate system performance and identify potential areas for improvement.

  • Oversee prototype testing, troubleshooting, and validation, making necessary design adjustments to meet functional, performance, and safety requirements.

  • Stay up to date with evolving industry standards, regulations, and best practices related to power electronics, electrical systems, energy generation and storage systems.

  • Create, design, and develop test specifications for new systems and firmware/software.

  • Troubleshoot designs to the component level.

  • Collaborate with other engineers, internal manufacturing partners, contract manufacturers, designers, and product specialists to optimize complex designs.

  • Create and maintain Statements of Requirements (SOR), schematics, and BOMs

  • Mentor and teach less experienced engineers.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimal Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.

  • 5+ years of relevant work experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in electrical engineering or related discipline.

  • Experience with PCBA design, fabrication, and manufacturing.

  • Hands on experience running tests on complex electronic components and/or systems including the use of oscilloscopes, power supplies, and other various electronic test equipment/meters.

  • Experience developing component and/or system level test plans, test procedures, and test reports.

  • Proficiency in development of firmware for the purpose of technology evaluations/investigations.
