Position Summary:
The Arc of Howard County is a dedicated full-time Senior Transportation Driver to work as part of the Transportation team. In this role, the Senior Driver will assume two major responsibilities: 1) Driving Duties: assist people with disabilities by providing safe and efficient transportation services; 2) Operational Support: assist Transportation Manager in day-to-day management of The Arc's fleet of vehicles.
Position Responsibilities:
  • Driving Duties-provide safe and efficient transportation service.
    • Safely transport individuals with disabilities to various locations, including medical appointments, work, educational institutions, and social events.
    • Assist passengers with boarding and disembarking, including wheelchairs, mobility aids, and other equipment.
    • Maintain strict adherence to schedules and routes while being flexible to accommodate passengers' needs.
    • Conduct regular vehicle maintenance checks to ensure safety and reliability.
    • Communicate effectively with passengers, caregivers, and team members, providing excellent customer service.
  • Operational Support-assist Transportation Manager in the following duties (when necessary):
    • Assist in overseeing the day-to-day management of the vehicle fleet, ensuring all vehicles are in top condition and meet safety standards.
    • Schedule regular maintenance and servicing of vehicles to prevent any disruptions in service.
    • Keep accurate records of vehicle usage, maintenance schedules, and any repairs made, contributing to efficient fleet operation.
    • Coordinate with maintenance providers and manage any necessary vehicle repairs or modifications to accommodate specific disabilities.
    • Monitor fuel consumption and manage fuel cards, aiming for cost-effective operations.
    • Schedule daily transportation routes for The Arc drivers.
    • Provide training and support to other drivers on vehicle safety, maintenance procedures, and the use of adaptive equipment within the vehicles.
  • When needed, coordinate vehicle assignments and act as a point of contact for staff and clients in need of transportation assistance
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

  • Valid driver's license with at least two years driving experience with demonstrated clean, safe driving record.
  • Experience in driving larger vehicles (vans) and knowledge of wheelchair-accessible vehicles is preferred.
  • Ability to interpret and implement all applicable policies and procedures.
  • Effective communication skills and willingness to work with culturally diverse teams.
  • Well-developed organizational skills that will apply to scheduling maintenance, transportation routes, managing repairs, and maintaining records.
  • Comfortable in using technology.
  • Understanding of the needs and challenges faced by people with disabilities.
