Senior Dfm Engineer information

What is a senior DFM engineer?

Senior DFM (Design for Manufacturability) Engineers are experienced professionals who specialize in optimizing product designs to ensure they can be efficiently and cost-effectively manufactured. They collaborate closely with design, engineering, and manufacturing teams to identify potential production challenges early in the design process. Their expertise helps minimize manufacturing risks, reduce costs, and improve product quality by recommending design modifications and best practices. Senior DFM Engineers often lead efforts to implement new manufacturing technologies and processes, ensuring products meet both functional and manufacturability requirements.

What are common collaboration points between a senior DFM engineer and other teams during the product development lifecycle?

As a Senior Design for Manufacturability (DfM) Engineer, you will frequently collaborate with cross-functional teams such as design, process engineering, and manufacturing. Your role involves providing early feedback to design engineers to optimize product designs for manufacturability, as well as working with manufacturing teams to troubleshoot production issues and ensure smooth handoff from prototyping to mass production. Regular meetings and design reviews are common touchpoints, where your expertise helps balance design intent with manufacturing constraints. This collaborative environment fosters innovation and drives product quality, making your input crucial throughout the development process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior DFM engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior DFM Engineer, you need deep expertise in design for manufacturability principles, semiconductor process knowledge, and typically a degree in electrical or electronics engineering. Proficiency with CAD tools (such as Cadence, Mentor Graphics, or Synopsys), scripting languages, and familiarity with industry standards like DRC and LVS are essential. Strong problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills help you effectively interface with cross-functional teams and drive design improvements. These skills ensure manufacturable, high-yield integrated circuit designs that meet cost, quality, and performance targets.

What is the difference between Senior Dfm Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectSenior Dfm EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Mechanical Engineering, DFM certificationsBachelor's or Master's in Mechanical Engineering
Work EnvironmentProduct development, manufacturing, cross-functional teamsDesign, analysis, prototyping in R&D or design departments
Industry UsageElectronics, consumer products, automotive manufacturingMechanical systems, machinery, product design
Primary FocusDesign for manufacturability, cost reduction, production efficiencyConceptual and detailed mechanical design, CAD modeling

The main difference is that a Senior Dfm Engineer specializes in designing products with manufacturing in mind, focusing on cost and production efficiency, while a Mechanical Design Engineer concentrates on creating detailed mechanical components and systems. Both roles require strong engineering credentials, but their daily tasks and industry focus differ.

How to become a senior DFM engineer?

To become a senior DFM (Design for Manufacturing) engineer, professionals typically need a bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field, along with several years of experience in product design, manufacturing processes, and design for manufacturability. Developing expertise in CAD tools, manufacturing standards, and quality control, as well as gaining certifications like Six Sigma, can enhance career progression to senior roles.

Job description

Symmetrio is recruiting for a Senior Electrical Engineer on behalf of our customer, a leading manufacturer of specialized medical equipment and quality assurance systems used to support the testing, measurement, and performance verification of medical equipment.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on Electrical Engineer with strong FPGA/digital design experience, solid analog electronics skills, and experience designing low-noise, low-leakage precision measurement circuits in a regulated industry.

This is an on-site position based in Melbourne, FL. Relocation assistance is available for qualified candidates.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop microcontroller and FPGA architectures for medical measurement and control systems.
  • Develop and verify FPGA designs using Verilog/VHDL for real-time signal processing and timing-critical applications.
  • Design and troubleshoot low-noise, low-leakage analog signal conditioning circuits, including femtoampere-range measurement systems.
  • Define system requirements, functional specifications, and verification/acceptance criteria; participate in design reviews and design control activities.
  • Own electrical design documentation, including schematics, PCB layout specifications, design specifications, and technical procedures.
  • Analyze and optimize noise, leakage, signal integrity, and overall circuit performance.
  • Support verification, validation, manufacturing troubleshooting, and design-for-manufacturability (DFM) activities.
  • Collaborate with firmware, mechanical, manufacturing, and other engineering teams to bring designs from concept through production.
  • Mentor junior engineers and serve as a technical subject matter expert (SME) on complex electrical design and troubleshooting challenges.
  • Ensure designs meet applicable medical-device regulatory and quality requirements, including IEC 60601, design controls, and traceability.
  • Maintain comprehensive engineering documentation and design records throughout the product development lifecycle.

Requirements

  • BS or MS in Electrical Engineering or equivalent discipline
  • 8–10+ years in electrical design and analysis with hands-on circuit design experience
  • Exceptional technical proficiency in digital design: microcontroller architecture, FPGA design (Verilog/VHDL), embedded systems
  • Strong experience in medical device product development (product lifecycle, design controls, FDA/IEC 60601)
  • Proficiency in DFM, FMEA, failure analysis, and reliability testing principles
  • Experience with design requirement flow-down, acceptance criteria, and design verification/validation
  • Self-directed, independent contributor; able to drive complex designs without heavy supervision
  • Proven ability to mentor and troubleshoot with junior engineers
  • Strong technical documentation skills; background in regulated industry (medical devices, aerospace, automotive preferred)

Benefits

  • Health Care Plan (Medical, Dental & Vision)
  • Retirement Plan (401k, IRA)
  • Paid Time Off (Vacation, Sick & Public Holidays)
