What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior DevOps Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Senior DevOps Software Engineer, you need deep experience in software development, system administration, automation, and cloud infrastructure, typically backed by a computer science degree or equivalent experience. Proficiency with tools like Docker, Kubernetes, Jenkins, AWS/Azure/GCP, and familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure-as-code is essential, along with relevant certifications such as AWS Certified DevOps Engineer. Strong problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills help you bridge the gap between development and operations teams. These skills ensure efficient, reliable delivery of software and scalable infrastructure, driving both operational excellence and business agility.

What are Senior DevOps Software Engineers?

Senior DevOps Software Engineers are experienced professionals who bridge the gap between software development and IT operations. They are responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining automated systems that enable efficient software delivery and infrastructure management. Their work includes managing CI/CD pipelines, ensuring system reliability, optimizing performance, and collaborating with development and operations teams to streamline processes. With a focus on automation, scalability, and security, Senior DevOps Engineers play a key role in accelerating product releases and maintaining high system availability.

What are some common challenges faced by Senior DevOps Software Engineers in large-scale production environments?

Senior DevOps Software Engineers often navigate the complexities of automating deployment pipelines, maintaining system reliability, and scaling infrastructure to meet business demands. Balancing speed of delivery with system security and stability is a frequent challenge, especially when coordinating across development, QA, and operations teams. Additionally, they must stay current with evolving cloud platforms and tools, ensuring seamless integration with existing systems while mentoring junior engineers and promoting best practices.

We’re looking for a Director of DevOps with a passion for learning, a kind heart, a positive attitude, and a great sense of humor to join our growing team. In this role, you will lead DevOps strategy, cloud infrastructure, reliability, automation, and platform operations for a SaaS engineering organization. You will mentor the DevOps team, drive best practices across AWS-first infrastructure, CI/CD, observability, incident response, security, and cost optimization, and partner closely with Engineering, Product, Security, Data, QA, executive leadership, and key vendors to improve system resilience, developer productivity, and delivery efficiency.

The Director of DevOps  will be a key player on an incredible team as we execute our mission to help local governments and school districts take the next step from good to great.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead DevOps Strategy and Team Execution: Define and champion the DevOps vision, operating model, roadmap, and priorities for a SaaS engineering organization of approximately 80 engineers.
  • Own Cloud Infrastructure Strategy and Cost Optimization: Lead AWS-first cloud strategy while managing Azure and Google Cloud usage, driving consolidation, governance, cost visibility, and FinOps accountability.
  • Drive Reliability, Observability, and Production Operations: Strengthen SRE practices, incident response, on-call operations, observability, alerting, postmortems, and reliability metrics across production systems.
  • Advance Infrastructure Automation and Developer Enablement: Improve infrastructure-as-code, CI/CD, deployment automation, environment management, self-service tooling, and developer productivity.
  • Champion Secure, AI-Enabled DevOps Practices: Evaluate and adopt AI-enabled tools and modern automation practices to improve infrastructure reviews, incident triage, documentation, CI/CD, and operational workflows with appropriate guardrails
  • Manage Strategic Platforms, Vendors, and Partnerships: Own key vendor relationships and platform decisions across AWS, Datadog, Databricks, and other cloud, observability, security, and developer tooling providers.
  • Build and Develop a High-Leverage DevOps Team: Lead hiring, mentoring, performance management, budgeting, and organizational planning for a team responsible for cloud infrastructure, reliability, automation, and platform operations.
Critical Skills/Experience:
  • Proven experience leading and scaling DevOps, platform, infrastructure, or SRE teams in a SaaS environment

  • Hands-on experience with infrastructure-as-code, CI/CD, deployment automation, environment management, secret management, and cloud policy controls.
  • Strong SRE and operational excellence track record, owning KPIs for reliability, uptime, and security remediation, with expertise in incident response.
  • Experience evaluating, implementing, and governing strategic third-party platforms across cloud, observability, data, security, and developer tooling
  • Working knowledge of AI-enabled engineering or DevOps workflows, including automation, infrastructure review, incident triage, documentation, or CI/CD improvement
  • Excellent communication skills, proven ability to collaborate with executives, manage critical vendor relationships, and mentor engineers across career paths.
  • Strong people leadership skills, including hiring, mentoring senior ICs, developing technical leaders, managing performance, and leading teams through growth and change

Technical Depth Across Core Platforms:

  • Deep cloud infrastructure leadership across AWS, with working familiarity across Azure and Google Cloud environments
  • Strong FinOps mindset with experience consolidating cloud usage, improving cost visibility, and driving accountability for cloud spend
  • Proven ability to lead DevOps strategy for a SaaS organization with multiple engineering teams and production systems
  • Strong command of observability practices, including logging, metrics, tracing, alerting, and operational insights using platforms such as Datadog
  • Experience building reliable, scalable, and secure cloud platforms that support engineering velocity and customer-facing uptime
  • Strong understanding of infrastructure-as-code, deployment automation, CI/CD, secret management, and policy-as-code standards
  • Data-driven approach to DevOps effectiveness, including deployment frequency, lead time, change failure rate, MTTR, developer satisfaction, cloud spend, and platform adoption
  • Practical understanding of AI-enabled DevOps opportunities, including anomaly detection, incident triage, cost optimization, infrastructure review, documentation, and developer self-service
