What is a senior DataOps engineer?

Senior DataOps Engineers are experienced professionals who design, implement, and manage data pipelines and workflows to ensure reliable, efficient, and scalable data operations within an organization. They bridge the gap between data engineering, DevOps, and analytics by automating data integration, deployment, and monitoring processes. Their role often includes optimizing data infrastructure, ensuring data quality, and enabling data teams to quickly deliver insights. Senior DataOps Engineers also mentor junior team members and help define best practices for data operations.

What are some common challenges a senior DataOps engineer faces when scaling data infrastructure for a growing organization?

A Senior DataOps Engineer often encounters challenges such as ensuring data pipeline reliability during rapid scaling, managing increasing data volume and complexity, and maintaining high data quality across distributed environments. Balancing automation with flexibility, integrating new tools with legacy systems, and coordinating with cross-functional teams (like data scientists and DevOps) are also key hurdles. Success in this role requires proactively identifying bottlenecks, optimizing workflows, and fostering a culture of collaboration to support evolving business needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior DataOps engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior DataOps Engineer, you need a solid background in data engineering, automation, CI/CD pipelines, and strong knowledge of data architecture, usually supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Expertise in tools like Apache Airflow, Kubernetes, Docker, cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP), and proficiency with scripting languages such as Python or Bash are typically required, along with certifications like AWS Certified Solutions Architect or Google Cloud Data Engineer. Outstanding problem-solving skills, collaboration, and effective communication are essential soft skills for integrating diverse teams and managing complex workflows. These capabilities ensure data reliability, streamlined operations, and scalable solutions in dynamic data-driven environments.

Job description

Company Overview:
Samsung SDS America (SDSA), the IT and innovation hub of Samsung, delivers innovative cloud, AI, digital logistics, cybersecurity, and enterprise solutions to transform the way businesses work and operate. We serve Fortune 500 companies across industries and are driving digital transformation with cutting-edge technologies and trusted services.
Position Summary:
Samsung SDS America is looking for a transformative leader to define the future of our cloud ecosystem. As the Senior Director of Managed Cloud Services, you will architect the strategic roadmap for our multi-cloud landscape (AWS, Azure, GCP, and Samsung Cloud Platform), bridging the gap between technical operations and aggressive business growth.
This is a high-visibility role for a leader who thrives on complexity. You will unify diverse technical towers-CloudOps, SecOps, DataOps, and DevOps-into a cohesive engine of innovation. Working directly with C-Suite leadership and global stakeholders, you will drive GTM enablement, cultivate hyperscaler alliances, and build a world-class culture of engineering excellence at our Ridgefield Park, NJ headquarters. This is a role for a Builder-Leader - someone deeply experienced in orchestrating technical talent to meet business goals.
Responsibilities:
Executive Leadership & Strategic Vision
  • Define and drive a multi-year, future-proof strategy for managed cloud services that anticipates market shifts, capitalizes on innovation, and directly addresses complex client challenges.
  • Lead the organizational design and evolution of a multi-disciplinary team. Foster a culture of extreme ownership, agility, and continuous innovation that attracts the industry's best talent.
  • Cultivate high-value, strategic alliances with Hyperscalers (AWS, Azure, GCP), ISVs, and key partners to co-create market-leading value propositions and accelerate go-to-market velocity.
  • Partner with C-level leadership and Global HQ to translate corporate vision into actionable service offerings, ensuring alignment between regional execution and global strategy.

Operational Mastery & Service Innovation
  • Oversee the end-to-end delivery lifecycle across a hybrid landscape (Samsung Cloud Platform, Data Center, and Public Cloud). Guarantee operational resilience, scalability, and security for mission-critical workloads.
  • Champion the shift toward next-generation operating models. Drive the adoption of SRE, DevOps, and intelligent automation to reduce toil, increase speed-to-market, and optimize unit economics.
  • Move beyond basic SLA compliance to deliver measurable business value. Utilize deep observability and transparent reporting to transition from a vendor relationship to a trusted strategic partnership.
  • Own the risk and compliance posture for the team, ensuring rigorous adherence to global standards (SOC2, ISO, HIPAA) and regulatory requirements.

Commercial Growth & Financial Ownership
  • Maintain fiscal accountability for the team. Drive financial modeling, forecasting, and resource allocation to maximize profitability without compromising service quality.
  • Lead the development of competitive pricing models and cost-optimization strategies. Bridge the gap between finance, procurement, and technical teams to ensure commercially viable, high-margin engagements.
  • Collaborate with business units to ensure that partner-aligned cloud initiatives deliver tangible ROI, effectively communicating financial wins to internal and external boards.

Talent Strategy & Organizational Culture
  • Actively recruit, mentor, and retain high-caliber leaders across business development, operations, and architecture. Design clear succession paths and career development frameworks.
  • Institutionalize learning by building robust internal training programs and knowledge-sharing ecosystems that keep the team at the cutting edge of cloud technology.
  • Serve as the primary bridge between the US and Korea HQ. Facilitate cross-regional collaboration to leverage global resources while addressing local market nuances.

Requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to build and scale high-performance sales and technical teams from the ground up. Must have extensive experience in full-cycle talent management, including strategic hiring, rigorous performance management (up to and including termination), and creating clear pathways for internal promotion and succession planning.
  • Proven track record of mentoring senior managers and individual contributors to foster a culture of accountability and continuous improvement. Experience designing training or mentorship programs that upskill staff on emerging cloud technologies and sales methodologies is essential.
  • 7+ years of experience in identifying, cultivating, and closing complex, net-new cloud service engagements with enterprise clients. Must demonstrate a history of exceeding revenue targets through direct sales and channel partnership strategies.
  • Deep experience navigating ecosystems with major cloud providers (AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud). Ability to leverage these partnerships for co-selling opportunities, market expansion, and developing joint go-to-market strategies.
  • Ability to analyze market trends and competitor landscapes to define compelling value propositions. Must be able to translate technical cloud capabilities into business solutions that resonate with C-level executives.
  • Deep understanding of the MSP business model, including 24/7 service delivery frameworks, ITIL alignment, and SLA/OLA management. Must have experience bridging the gap between sales promises and operational delivery capabilities.
  • Experience leading operational excellence initiatives to improve margins and service velocity. This includes identifying inefficiencies in delivery workflows and implementing automation or process re-engineering to optimize resource utilization.
  • Demonstrated success managing a significant P&L (Profit & Loss) statement for a business unit or division. Must be proficient in financial forecasting, budget allocation, cost control, and margin analysis to ensure sustainable profitability.
  • Expertise in structuring complex managed service contracts, including pricing models (fixed fee, consumption-based, hybrid) and legal negotiations, ensuring long-term commercial viability and risk mitigation.
  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills, with the ability to report on business health, operational metrics, and strategic direction to internal executive leadership (SDSK) and external C-Suite.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or relevant field is required. MBA is preferred.
  • Must be eligible to work in the US for any employer without restrictions.
  • Must be able and willing to work onsite in Plano, TX.
  • Must be able to travel for business up to 25%.
