SUBFUNCTION DEFINITION:

The Senior Data Engineer in the Population Health Data & Analytics team at the top pediatric hospital in the country is responsible for managing and optimizing complex data sources that support critical aspects of the HealthVine health network, including financial, care management, eligibility, claims, and regulatory reporting. This role involves the design, architecture, and stabilization of data systems, ensuring that data is clean, accurate, and accessible for operational decision-making. The engineer develops and maintains data pipelines and transformation processes that enhance data quality, contributing to the scalability and cost-efficiency of the network.

The role requires the candidate to incorporate advanced data quality checks to ensure accuracy and compliance, facilitating smoother transitions and providing insights that drive decision-making across the enterprise.

REPRESENTATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES

Analysis

  • Develop complex data pipelines across diverse data sources and endpoints.
  • Stay informed on national and international healthcare data integration and analytics trends, ensuring CCHMC’s participation where applicable.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge through continuing education, literature, and seminars, applying new insights to department practices.
  • Deepen understanding of CCHMC business processes and align data and collaboration strategies to evolving business needs.
  • Actively participate in the development and execution of enterprise data strategies.
  • Collaborate with platform engineers, security engineers, and lead data engineers to refine and update standards for data pipelines and ETL processing.

Metadata Management & Data Modeling

  • Develop and implement complex enterprise data models to support long-term strategies.
  • Create maintenance plans for enterprise data assets.
  • Review data pipelines, data modeling, and data quality code from peers.
  • Work across cloud, on-premises, and hybrid environments, using containerization techniques.
  • Drive the adoption of agile methodologies and apply DataOps principles to data models and pipelines, improving integration, automation, and communication between data managers and consumers.

Technical & Business Skill

  • Demonstrate mastery in data management practices and architectures, such as Data Modeling, Data Warehousing, Data Lake, Data Hub, etc.
  • Master core Data Engineering technologies including SQL, object-oriented scripting, and DevOps principles.
  • Develop a deep understanding of CCHMC healthcare clinical, business, and research processes to build appropriate data solutions.
  • Obtain Epic certifications as needed and continue building skills through continuing education.
  • Mentor junior staff in developing both business and technical skills.

Technical Support & Customer Service

  • Provide excellent end-user support, including ongoing monitoring of Service Level Agreements for incident management.
  • Collaborate with other teams to ensure customer-centered incident management and support.
  • Adhere to and promote continual adoption of change management policies and procedures.
  • Provide second- and third-level problem resolution and support efforts to improve customer satisfaction.
  • Develop and refine troubleshooting documentation and mentor junior staff.
  • Collaborate with platform engineers to create proactive monitoring systems to identify and address problems before they impact production.
  • Engage with vendors to ensure adequate support for CCHMC investments and escalate support issues as needed.
  • Participate in 24-hour on-call rotation.

Project Execution & Management

  • Execute project tasks with urgency and high quality.
  • Communicate status clearly using departmental project management tools.
  • Participate in project meetings and stand-ups, following time-tracking and project management guidelines.
  • Serve as technical lead for moderately complex projects, ensuring proper scope, risk, and budget management in collaboration with project managers.
  • Lead project meetings and workgroups.
Qualifications:

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE


Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in a computer science, statistics, applied mathematics, data management, information systems, information science or a related quantitative field.
  • 3 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Preferred:
  • Experience with Healthcare Insurance Payors
  • Advanced degree (MS, Ph.D., postgraduate diploma) in computer science, statistics, applied mathematics, information science, data management, or related quantitative field, or equivalent work experience.

  • Data management disciplines including data integration, modeling, optimization and data quality, and/or other areas directly relevant to data engineering responsibilities and tasks.
