Senior Databricks Data Engineer information

What is a Senior Databricks Data engineer?

Senior Databricks Data Engineers are experienced professionals who design, develop, and optimize large-scale data processing pipelines using the Databricks platform. They work with big data technologies like Apache Spark, Delta Lake, and cloud platforms such as Azure or AWS. Their responsibilities include building and maintaining ETL processes, ensuring data quality, and collaborating with data scientists and analysts to deliver reliable, high-performance data solutions. As senior engineers, they also mentor junior team members and contribute to architectural decisions.

How does a Senior Databricks Data engineer typically collaborate with data scientists and analysts on large-scale projects?

A Senior Databricks Data Engineer works closely with data scientists and analysts to design, build, and optimize data pipelines that enable advanced analytics and machine learning initiatives. They often participate in cross-functional meetings to understand data requirements, translate them into scalable ETL processes, and ensure data quality and accessibility. Regular collaboration also involves troubleshooting data issues, optimizing Spark jobs for performance, and sharing best practices for data management. This close teamwork ensures that analytical teams have reliable, timely, and well-structured data to drive insights and decision-making.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Databricks Data engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Databricks Data Engineer, you need advanced expertise in data engineering concepts, big data technologies, and proficiency in programming languages like Python or Scala, usually backed by a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with Databricks, Apache Spark, cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, or GCP), and certifications like Databricks Certified Data Engineer are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and the ability to collaborate across teams distinguish top performers in this role. These skills are essential to efficiently design scalable data solutions, optimize data workflows, and drive business insights in complex data environments.

What is the difference between Senior Databricks Data Engineer vs Data Engineer?

AspectSenior Databricks Data EngineerData Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires experience with Databricks, Spark, cloud platforms, and often certifications like Databricks Certified Data Engineer AssociateRequires knowledge of data pipelines, SQL, ETL tools, and often cloud platform experience, but less specialized in Databricks
Work EnvironmentWorks primarily within Databricks environment, focusing on big data processing and analyticsWorks across various data tools and platforms, including traditional ETL and cloud services
Industry UsageCommon in organizations leveraging Databricks for big data analytics and machine learningWidely used across industries for general data pipeline development and data management

The main difference is that a Senior Databricks Data Engineer specializes in using Databricks and Spark for big data solutions, often requiring specific certifications and experience. A Data Engineer has a broader focus on data pipeline development across various tools and platforms, with less emphasis on Databricks-specific skills.

Is a Senior Databricks Data Engineer in demand?

A Senior Databricks Data Engineer is in high demand due to the increasing adoption of cloud-based data platforms and the need for advanced data processing skills. Professionals with expertise in Spark, SQL, and cloud environments like Azure or AWS are particularly sought after in data-driven industries.

Job description

About the Role

At NinjaOne, we’re looking for a skilled Senior Data Engineer to join the Analytics Platform and Data Science team to help enable product analytics and data science across NinjaOne’s expanding product offering. You’ll build the pipelines and data foundations that provide line of sight into product health, adoption, and performance turning raw, messy data into clean, usable datasets that data scientists, analysts, and stakeholders across the Product organization can rely on. This is an exciting opportunity to work at the intersection of business and highly technical products, partner with teams across Product and Engineering, and help shape how we use data to guide product decisions in a fast-paced environment.

Location — We are flexible on remote working from home, if you are located in the USA and reside in one of the following states: CA, CO, CT, FL, GA, *IL, KS, MA, MD, ME, NJ, NC, NY, OR, TN, TX, VA, and WA. We have physical offices in Austin, TX and Tampa, FL, if you prefer a hybrid option.

What You'll be Doing

  • Product Visibility & Health: Drive line of sight into how our products are used and performing by building the data foundation behind product health, adoption, and usage analytics.
  • Data Pipeline Development: Design and build ETL/ELT pipelines with Databricks, dbt, and AWS that extract, transform, and load data from multiple sources, making it usable for analysts and data scientists across the org.
  • Data Enablement for Analytics & Data Science: Partner closely with data scientists to prepare structured and unstructured data for modeling — including product usage, adoption, and customer behavior work.
  • Data Cleaning & Preparation: Own the transformation of raw, messy data into clean, well-structured datasets, including feature engineering support (e.g., creating dimensions, discretizing variables).
  • Product Telemetry & Streaming Data: Build and maintain pipelines for product telemetry, event, and streaming data sources as the team’s needs grow.
  • Complex Systems Fluency: Get familiar with NinjaOne’s distributed product architecture and the data it generates, and translate that complexity into clean, well-modeled datasets that bridge business questions with highly technical products.
  • Automation & Optimization: Automate and optimize data workflows to reduce manual processes and improve efficiency in data collection, storage, and processing.
  • Data Visualization: Build dashboards and reports in Tableau and Databricks to expose key data points and trends to business stakeholders.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with data science and analytics teammates and with stakeholders and teams across Product and Engineering to gather requirements and ensure clean, usable data flows to the right people.
  • Other duties as needed.

About You

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or equivalent work experience preferred.
  • 7+ years of experience in software development, with a strong focus on data engineering and data science.
  • Demonstrated business impact and growth in prior roles
  • Expertise in Python and SQL.
  • Experience building ETL pipelines and managing large-scale data systems.
  • Strong experience with Databricks, dbt, and AWS data services; experience with Unity Catalog is a plus.
  • Comfortable working with structured and unstructured data; experience with product telemetry, event, or streaming data is a plus.
  • Solid understanding of data cleaning, preparation, and feature engineering to support downstream modeling.
  • Experience with Tableau or similar BI tools for dashboarding and visualization.
  • Able to work independently with messy data from sourcing through cleaning to handoff for modeling and comfortable operating in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communicator able to work directly with technical and non-technical stakeholders and bridge business needs with highly technical work.

Experience that will make you a standout candidate:

  • Previous experience partnering directly with data scientists or analytics teams on model-ready data pipelines.
  • Experience with product analytics usage metrics, adoption and retention analysis, or telemetry/event data at scale.
  • Understanding of Generative AI and Deep Learning frameworks.
  • Experience with streaming frameworks (e.g., Kafka, Kinesis, Spark Structured Streaming).
