What jobs in the US pay 300,000 a year?

Senior Data Modelers with extensive experience, advanced skills in data architecture, and proficiency in tools like SQL and Python can reach annual salaries of $300,000 or more, especially in high-demand industries such as finance or technology. Such roles often require advanced degrees, certifications, and a strong track record of managing complex data systems.

What does a Senior Data Modeler do?

A Senior Data Modeler is responsible for designing, implementing, and managing data models that define how data is stored, organized, and accessed within an organization. They work closely with stakeholders to understand business requirements and translate them into efficient data structures, often using tools like ER diagrams and database modeling software. Senior Data Modelers ensure data integrity, optimize data flows, and support data governance initiatives. They may also mentor junior data modelers and collaborate with database administrators, data architects, and developers to deliver effective data solutions.

How much does a data modeler make?

A senior data modeler typically earns between $90,000 and $130,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. They often require strong skills in data architecture, modeling tools, and database management systems. Compensation may also include benefits and opportunities for professional development.

What is the difference between Senior Data Modeler vs Data Architect?

AspectSenior Data ModelerData Architect
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Computer Science, Data Management, or related field; certifications like CDMPBachelor's or Master's in Computer Science, Information Systems; certifications like TOGAF, CDMP
Work EnvironmentData teams, database development, data analysis projectsIT departments, enterprise data strategy, system design
Employer & Industry UsageFinance, healthcare, tech companies focusing on data modelingLarge enterprises, consulting firms, organizations with complex data infrastructure
Common Search & ComparisonOften compared for technical data modeling skillsBroader scope including data infrastructure and architecture planning

While both roles require strong data management skills and similar certifications, Senior Data Modelers focus primarily on designing and optimizing data models, whereas Data Architects develop comprehensive data strategies and oversee overall data infrastructure. The roles often collaborate but differ in scope and responsibilities.

Is 40 too late for data science?

Age is not a barrier to becoming a senior data modeler or entering data science, as skills and experience are more important. Many professionals successfully transition into data science later in their careers by acquiring relevant skills such as programming, statistics, and tools like SQL and Python, often through online courses or certifications. Continuous learning and practical experience are key factors for career advancement regardless of age.

How does a Senior Data Modeler typically collaborate with other departments during large-scale projects?

A Senior Data Modeler often works closely with business analysts, data architects, and software engineers to ensure that data models align with both technical requirements and business objectives. Collaboration typically involves gathering requirements, translating business needs into data structures, and participating in design reviews. Senior Data Modelers also play a key role in facilitating communication between IT and non-technical stakeholders to ensure data integrity and usability across systems. Effective teamwork and clear documentation are essential to navigate the complexities of large-scale data initiatives.

Will AI replace data modelers?

AI tools can automate certain aspects of data modeling, such as generating schemas or identifying patterns, but senior data modelers are essential for designing complex data structures, ensuring data quality, and making strategic decisions. Human expertise remains critical for interpreting business needs and validating models, making complete replacement unlikely in the near term.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Data Modeler, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Data Modeler, you need deep expertise in database design, data modeling techniques, and strong proficiency in SQL, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with data modeling tools such as ERwin, IBM InfoSphere Data Architect, or Microsoft Visio, and knowledge of database systems like Oracle or SQL Server, are typically required. Excellent analytical thinking, attention to detail, and strong collaboration and communication skills help you work effectively with cross-functional teams. These competencies ensure accurate, scalable, and efficient data structures that support business intelligence and decision-making across the organization.

Role: Senior Data Modeler — Enterprise Analytics & Data Platforms
Location: Morristown, NJ (Hybrid — 3 days/week onsite)
We’re looking for a Senior Data Modeler (7+ years) to design, develop, and maintain scalable data models that power enterprise analytics, data warehousing, and modern application development. In this role, you’ll partner closely with engineers, architects, analysts, and business stakeholders to translate complex requirements into high-performing data structures, modeling standards, and documentation that improve usability, governance, and data quality across the organization.
What you’ll do
  •  Design conceptual, logical, and physical data models for relational, dimensional, and NoSQL data stores.
  •  Create and maintain ERDs, data flow diagrams, and modeling documentation aligned to enterprise standards.
  •  Collaborate with engineering and architecture teams to support efficient ingestion, transformation, and reporting pipelines.
  •  Translate business needs into optimized schemas that balance scalability, performance, and maintainability.
  •  Lead data model reviews, enforce standards, and mentor junior team members on best practices.
  •  Develop and maintain data dictionaries, metadata, and lineage documentation to improve discoverability and reuse.
  •  Design star/snowflake schemas for data warehouse and data mart environments in partnership with analytics teams.
  •  Identify and resolve data quality, redundancy, and integrity issues through effective modeling and normalization/denormalization strategies.
  •  Support governance initiatives, including standardization, cataloging, and stewardship alignment.
  •  Participate in Agile delivery, producing modeling artifacts iteratively within sprint cycles.
Required qualifications
  •  7+ years of experience in data modeling, data architecture, or a closely related discipline.
  •  Expert proficiency with modeling tools such as Erwin, ER/Studio, and/or dbt.
  •  Strong experience with relational databases (SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL) and cloud data platforms such as Databricks, Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, and Azure Synapse.
  •  Deep knowledge of dimensional modeling approaches (Kimball, Inmon) and Data Vault 2.0.
  •  Advanced SQL skills for schema design, query optimization, and data validation.
  •  Proven ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and deliver in consulting/contractor-style environments.
  •  Strong communication skills and the ability to explain technical concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
Nice to have
  •  NoSQL experience (MongoDB, Cassandra, DynamoDB).
  •  Lakehouse architecture familiarity (Delta Lake, Apache Iceberg, Apache Hudi).
  •  Exposure to governance/catalog tools (Collibra, Alation, Atlan).
  •  Understanding of data mesh concepts and federated ownership models.
  •  Experience in regulated domains such as finance, healthcare, or retail.
