Job description

The UI Stead Family Department of Pediatrics is seeking a Clinical Data Manager within cardiology to abstract reliable data from the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) for the purpose of submitting clinical data on a specific patient population to national clinical registries including NCDR IMPACT (catheterization and electrophysiology), CCISC, PHTS, ACTION, SV-One, PAC3, and UNOS. Extract data from databases for annual reporting to US News and World Report and other external sources as needed. Participation in national clinical registries is required by accrediting agencies and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid and provides UI Healthcare with accurate information (non-administrative data) to ensure quality and safe care for adult and pediatric populations. This includes providing registry data on a regular basis and implementing performance improvement measures involving the registry population, ensuring compliance with all registry requirements for data abstraction, entry, and reporting, maintaining knowledge on the metric specifications, and the evidence-based standards incorporated into the metrics.

Job duties include:

  •  Data collection for select patient populations and/or publicly reported metrics throught the application of national registries requirements and/or publicly reported  metric specifications. 

  • Establish reliable and efficient processes for the collection of data components from the electronic medical record.

  • Identify and implement performance improvement opportunities based on registry and/or publicly reported metric information.

  • Develop performance improvement principles to improve patient outcomes.

  • Consult with senior QIP staff, nurses, physicians, and other UI Health Care staff members to evaluate and improve patient outcomes.

  • Maintain knowledge on the metric specifications and the evidence-based standards incorporated into the metrics; collaborate with clinicians to integrate recommendations into practice.

  • Accurately track compliance variances and report results to clinicians in a real time basis.

  • Serve as primary educational resource on registry and/or publicly reported metric requirements, data elements, and reporting options. Assist in developing educational material and delivering presentations related to registry information.

  • Interact with registry websites and maintain familiarity with upcoming changes to registry or data collection requirements.

  • Perform quality management audits.

  • Educate and supervise individuals on accurate data entry and provide constructive feedback for improvement in data entry quality.

  • Provide regulatory and clinical quality oversight ensuring data accuracy/reporting

  • Facilitate quality and operational improvement initiatives for Pediatric Cardiology

  • Utilize software applications available at the site to ensure accurate and timely entry and transmission of data to the registry. Regularly review site accrual reports on websites and respond to accrual report alerts.

  • Contact patients and/or families via telephone and/or written communications post-procedure to capture additional information for registries while ensuring HIPAA compliance.

  • Establish effective working relationships with members of the hospital community, especially staff clinical departments, Nursing, Health Information Management, and Health Care Information Systems. 

  • Actively participate in unit, departmental and/or intradepartmental committees.

  • Oversee and advise on institutional Data Use Agreements.

  • Consult with external agencies to obtain and provide education and resources.

  • Review data entered by others post entry to ensure data is accurate and of high quality.

  • Confirm study data are valid and reliable; lead statistical analysis of data to implement potential business improvements.

  • Coordinate interactions between internal and external customers for national registries.

  • Assist in writing grant proposals, abstracts, data reports, presentations, and manuscripts for publication

childhood illnesses and educating the next generation of pediatric health care providers.  The Department comprises the medical and research staff of UI Stead Family Children's Hospital.  UI Stead Family Children's Hospital is one of the nation's top-ranked pediatric care and research institutions, and Iowa's only comprehensive children's hospital.

About the Division of Cardiology:

The Division of Cardiology at the University of Iowa Stead Family Department of Pediatrics provides compassionate, family-centered, and state-of-the-art delivery of care to children and young adults with congenital and acquired heart disease. Patients are followed through the transition to adulthood. Dedicated staff have expertise in acquired heart diseases such as cardiomyopathies, cardiac arrhythmias, congenital heart disease, cardiac dysfunction in malignancy, and cardiac implications associated with pediatric obesity. The division provides the only expertise for electrophysiology, diagnostic, advanced imaging, interventional and transplant services for children and youth in the state of Iowa. Skilled surgical support and exceptional critical care postoperative support has outcomes that have excellent results in national databases. The division has a multi-purpose diagnostic and interventional procedure lab which is constantly expanding and including state-of-the-art technologies.

Required Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree in a basic science or healthcare-related field from an accredited college or university, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Minimum of three years of related experience with data abstraction and/or analysis of clinical data

  • Demonstrated proficiency with electronic medical records, including reporting functions

  • Demonstrated knowledge of incorporating evidence-based practice techniques in a health care setting

  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Power Point and Excel

  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills

Desired Qualifications

  • A master's degree in health-related field or informatics

  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa

  • Demonstrated clinical experience with pediatric patients in a pediatric intensive care unit, cardiovascular intensive care unit and/or cardiac transplant

  • Computer proficiency with databases or software applications

  • Formal continuing education in performance improvement techniques, such as DMAIC, TQM, or similar nationally recognized techniques

  • Professional certification related to healthcare quality (i.e. CPHQ, ASQ)

  • Some (6 months - 1 year) experience in public speaking, technical writing and/or teaching
