What is a senior data engineer?

Senior Data Engineers are experienced professionals who design, build, and maintain large-scale data processing systems and infrastructure. They are responsible for developing data pipelines, managing databases, and ensuring the efficient flow and integrity of data across various platforms. Senior Data Engineers often collaborate with data scientists, analysts, and other engineers to support business intelligence and machine learning projects. They also play a key role in implementing best practices for data security, quality, and governance within an organization.

What are some common challenges senior data engineers face when integrating data from multiple sources?

Senior Data Engineers often encounter challenges such as inconsistent data formats, varying data quality, and differing update frequencies when integrating data from multiple sources. Addressing these issues requires designing robust ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) pipelines, implementing data validation checks, and collaborating closely with source system owners to ensure data integrity. Effective communication with cross-functional teams and leveraging scalable data integration tools are also essential to streamline the process and minimize errors.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior data engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Data Engineer, you need strong expertise in data modeling, ETL development, programming (such as Python or Scala), and a degree in computer science or a related field. Proficiency with big data technologies (like Hadoop, Spark), cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), and database systems, as well as relevant certifications, is highly valuable. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills help you collaborate across teams and mentor junior engineers. These skills and qualities ensure robust, scalable data solutions that support organizational decision-making and growth.

Job description

Who We Are

At KEV, we help school districts eliminate the school finance blind spot. Our platform gives district finance teams real-time visibility and traceability into every dollar collected at the school level - whether it's cash, cheque, or digital. From field trips to fundraisers, we help them manage every dollar with confidence. More than 27,000 schools across North America trust KEV to manage over $8 billion annually. By unifying payments, accounting, and reporting, KEV simplifies life for bookkeepers, builds trust with parents, and gives finance leaders the oversight their current systems cannot. It's how we help schools stay compliant, reduce risk, and focus on what matters most, student success.

Backed by Five Arrows, the PE arm of Rothschild & Co., KEV is investing more than ever to support K-12 in a world of tighter budgets, rising scrutiny, and fast-changing tech. We're headquartered in Toronto, with offices across North America.

If you're excited by the idea of building tech that protects schools, empowers finance teams, and improves education through better systems, KEV is the place for you.

This role is for an active vacancy.

 About the Role

We're looking for a detail-oriented, payments-savvy Senior Data Analyst to join the Data Analytics team, reporting into the Director, Data Analytics. The initial term is a 6 month on a contract basis,. This role will play a key part in building the analytics foundation for KEV's Payments business.

You will partner closely with the Payments team to transform data from multiple platforms and payment processors into trusted, scalable data models, reporting, and insights that help the business understand performance, identify opportunities, and grow payment volume and revenue.

You will work across the analytics lifecycle - from understanding raw transactional and processor data, to building transformation pipelines and reusable data models, to creating reporting and conducting deeper analysis that explains what is driving Payments performance.

As a senior individual contributor, you will be expected to work independently, build strong stakeholder relationships, and own analytical initiatives end-to-end, from problem definition and data modeling through reporting, analysis, and recommendations. You will also be expected to lead projects autonomously from day one.

As a key contributor to KEV's data-driven decision-making, your work will help influence Payments strategy, product development, customer engagement, and broader business decisions.

 What You'll Do
  • Partner closely with the Payments team to understand business priorities, payment flows, operational processes, and analytical needs.
  • Build and maintain scalable payment data models and transformation pipelines using SQL and dbt, turning raw transactional and processor data into trusted analytics-ready datasets.
  • Help establish and mature our dbt implementation, including modeling standards, testing, documentation, lineage, reusable models, and development best practices.
  • Develop a strong understanding of the end-to-end payment lifecycle, including transaction initiation, authorization, settlement, fees, refunds, chargebacks, payment methods, and processor activity.
  • Create dashboards and reporting that provide visibility into Payments performance, adoption, transaction trends, and revenue impact.
  • Move beyond reporting what happened to identify why performance changed, where value is being lost, and where opportunities exist to improve adoption, payment volume, and revenue.
  • Own stakeholder relationships and lead analytics projects autonomously, from scoping through delivery
  • Conduct ad-hoc analyses to answer strategic questions about product and payments performance
  • Provide data-backed recommendations to drive increased payment revenue and product growth
Who You Are
  • 5+ years of experience in Data Analytics, Business Intelligence or Analytics Engineering, preferably within a payments organization. Prior experience with SaaS, fintech, or technology is a bonus.
  • Strong hands-on SQL skills are required, including experience working with complex transactional datasets and building reusable analytical data models.
  • Strong hands-on dbt experience is required, including building models, tests, documentation, and transformation pipelines.
  • Experience working within a modern cloud data warehouse or lakehouse, such as Databricks, Snowflake, Redshift, or BigQuery is required.
  • Experience with a BI tool such as Databricks AI/BI is preferred, but Tableau, Power BI, or Looker will also be considered.
  • Payments domain experience is strongly preferred, with experience working with transactional or payment processor data from raw sources through transformation, analysis, and reporting.
  • Seniority to work independently, own stakeholder relationships, and lead projects with minimal oversight
  • Strong experience collaborating with key partners to refine stakeholder requirements and identify and analyze trends
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills with strong attention to detail
  • Ability to communicate insights clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  •

Salary Range - $110,000 - $130,000

Note: We set standard base pay ranges for all roles based on function, level, and country location, benchmarked against similar stage growth companies. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors, including skills, depth of work experience and relevant licenses/credentials, and may vary from the amounts listed above.

 What We Offer

  • Meaningful benefits- Because your well-being matters; both at work and at home.
  • Retirement Savings Support - We help you plan for your future with company-matched programs, including RRSP matching in Canada and 401(k) contributions in the U.S.
  • Professional development - We invest in your growth with ongoing learning, stretch opportunities, and continuing education, including KEV Academy for onboarding and skill-building, plus KEV University, our online platform offering a wide range of courses.
  • Hybrid model - 3 days in the office to collaborate and connect, with flexibility the rest of the week.
  • Flexible PTO - Take the time you need to recharge with close to 4 weeks of vacation and a company-wide holiday closure
  • Office perks - Enjoy a fully stocked snack bar and occasional catered lunches-because we know that great conversations (and ideas) often start around good food.
