What does a senior data center engineer do?

A Senior Data Center Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining the critical infrastructure that supports a data center, including servers, networking equipment, power, and cooling systems. They oversee the performance, security, and reliability of data center operations, often managing large-scale hardware deployments and troubleshooting complex technical issues. Additionally, they may lead teams, develop best practices, and ensure compliance with industry standards to optimize data center efficiency and uptime.

What is the difference between Senior Data Center Engineer vs Data Center Technician?

AspectSenior Data Center EngineerData Center Technician
CertificationsCCNA, CCNP, Data Center certificationsCompTIA A+, Data Center certifications
Work EnvironmentDesign, planning, troubleshooting complex systemsHardware installation, maintenance, basic troubleshooting
ResponsibilitiesSystem architecture, network design, performance optimizationEquipment setup, cable management, routine repairs

The Senior Data Center Engineer typically handles advanced design, planning, and troubleshooting of data center infrastructure, requiring higher certifications and experience. In contrast, Data Center Technicians focus on hardware installation and maintenance tasks. While both roles work within data centers and may share certifications, the engineer's role is more strategic and technical, whereas technicians perform operational support.

What are some common challenges faced by senior data center engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Senior Data Center Engineers often encounter challenges such as maintaining high system uptime, managing rapid technology changes, and ensuring robust security protocols. Addressing these involves proactive monitoring, regular system updates, and collaborating closely with IT security teams to implement best practices. Additionally, effective communication with project managers and other engineers is key to quickly resolving issues and supporting business continuity. Continuous learning and adaptability are essential for staying ahead of emerging technologies and evolving data center standards.

Job description

Senior Data Engineer

Denver, CO

YES Communities, founded in 2008, owns and operates nearly 300 manufactured housing communities with locations across the United States. YES takes a new approach to manufactured home communities and works to build and maintain an environment in each community that reflects their positive YES attitude.

We're looking for a Senior Data Engineer to own and evolve the enterprise data platform that powers reporting, analytics, planning, and automation across the company. You'll build scalable pipelines, integrations, and data models that transform operational data into trusted data used throughout the organization.

As a key member of our team, you'll help shape the future of our data platform by influencing architecture decisions and modernizing core data infrastructure. Your work will support operational teams, executives, and institutional investors, and you'll partner closely with BI, FP&A, IT, and business stakeholders to deliver reliable, scalable data solutions that drive better business decisions.

Why YES?

At YES Communities, we invest in the people who build our data platform as much as the platform itself. You'll join a team where your technical judgment is trusted, your ideas on architecture and process are heard, and your growth is treated as a priority. We set clear goals and then trust you to run with them, giving you the ownership to solve problems your way while knowing your work directly shapes how leaders across the company make decisions. We're building a diverse, collaborative team, and we take pride in watching our engineers grow into the go-to experts on our data and platform.

What Youโ€™ll Do

  • Design, build, and maintain scalable ETL/ELT pipelines using Azure Data Factory, SSIS, and SQL Server to integrate operational data into the enterprise data warehouse
  • Develop and optimize enterprise data models, views, and semantic layers that serve as the trusted source of truth for reporting and analytics, including modernizing legacy stored procedure logic into more maintainable structures
  • Engineer and maintain API integrations with third-party platforms and vendor systems
  • Monitor pipeline health and data quality by implementing automated validation, reconciliation, and alerting so issues are caught before they reach the business
  • Tune query and pipeline performance, and recommend architectural improvements as data volumes and business needs grow
  • Champion engineering best practices across the team โ€” version control, code review, testing, and documentation โ€” and contribute to data governance through metadata management, lineage, and metric definition
  • Partner with BI developers, analysts, FP&A, IT, and business stakeholders to translate business requirements into well-modeled, high-performing data solutions
  • Deliver accurate, timely data that supports recurring operational, financial, executive, and investor reporting
  • Evaluate and adopt modern data engineering technologies, including AI-assisted development tools, where they improve engineering quality, productivity, or platform reliability

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of hands-on data engineering experience designing and maintaining production ETL/ELT pipelines
  • Advanced SQL skills, including complex query development, performance tuning, and working with large relational datasets in SQL Server or a comparable database platform
  • Demonstrated experience interacting with various business stakeholders and guiding technical peers to appropriate solutions
  • Experience building and orchestrating pipelines with Azure Data Factory, SSIS, or similar integration tools
  • Experience developing data models, views, and semantic layers that serve enterprise reporting and analytics
  • Working knowledge of API-based integrations with third-party systems and vendor platforms
  • Proficiency with version control and engineering best practices, including code review, testing, and documentation
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to translate business requirements into technical solutions for non-technical stakeholders
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
