Senior Data Center Controls Engineer information

What does a senior data center controls engineer do?

A Senior Data Center Controls Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining the control systems that manage data center environments, including HVAC, power, and security systems. They ensure that all critical infrastructure operates efficiently and reliably by monitoring systems, troubleshooting issues, and optimizing performance. This role often involves working with building automation systems (BAS), programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and other advanced technologies to maintain optimal conditions for servers and networking equipment. Senior engineers also lead projects, mentor junior staff, and collaborate with other engineering teams to support the data center's overall mission.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior data center controls engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Data Center Controls Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical or mechanical engineering, in-depth knowledge of building automation systems (BAS), and several years of relevant experience. Familiarity with control systems platforms like Schneider Electric, Siemens, or Johnson Controls, as well as certifications such as LEED, PMP, or relevant BAS training, are typically required. Exceptional problem-solving, project management, and communication skills set top professionals apart in this role. These skills ensure efficient system performance, minimize downtime, and support critical infrastructure reliability in data center environments.

What are the typical collaboration points between a senior data center controls engineer and other teams within a data center?

As a Senior Data Center Controls Engineer, you'll frequently collaborate with facilities management, IT operations, and project management teams. Your role often involves coordinating with mechanical and electrical engineers to ensure systems like HVAC, power, and fire suppression integrate seamlessly with the building automation controls. Additionally, you may work closely with vendors and contractors during system upgrades or maintenance, and provide technical guidance to junior engineers. This cross-functional teamwork is essential for maintaining uptime, optimizing energy efficiency, and supporting data center growth.

What is the difference between Senior Data Center Controls Engineer vs Data Center Controls Technician?

AspectSenior Data Center Controls EngineerData Center Controls Technician

Work EnvironmentDesign, development, and oversight of control systems in data centers, often in office settingsInstallation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of control systems on-site in data centers
ResponsibilitiesSystem design, programming, and optimization of controls; project managementSystem installation, routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs

The Senior Data Center Controls Engineer focuses on designing and managing control systems, requiring advanced technical skills and project oversight. In contrast, the Data Center Controls Technician handles hands-on installation and maintenance tasks. Both roles are essential for data center operations but differ in scope, responsibilities, and required experience.

Job description

Job Title: Junior Data Center Engineer

Location: Piscataway, NJ (multiple nearby sites)

Schedule: Onsite, shift based (must be open to all)

Contract To Hire

About the Role

Our client is looking for a Data Center Engineer who wants real hands-on experience in a production environment, not just lab work and theory. This is a great opportunity for someone early in their career whoโ€™s comfortable learning on the job, rotating across multiple sites, and working flexible shifts. Think growth role, not babysitting servers.

What Youโ€™ll Be Doing

  • Supporting Linux based systems in a data center or enterprise environment
  • Assisting with server builds, deployments, patching, and basic troubleshooting
  • Monitoring systems and responding to alerts and incidents
  • Performing basic networking tasks (connectivity checks, VLAN awareness, cabling coordination)
  • Working across four nearby locations in the Piscataway, NJ area
  • Collaborating with senior engineers and learning fast

What Weโ€™re Looking For

  • Junior level Linux experience is totally fine (school, labs, internships, or early career)
  • Comfortable with basic Linux commands, file systems, permissions, and processes
  • Junior networking exposure is a plus (TCP/IP basics, DNS, routing fundamentals)
  • Willingness to work onsite and rotate between four local locations
  • Open to working one of three shifts (flexibility is key here)
  • Strong attitude, curiosity, and reliability (we can teach skills, not work ethic)

Nice to Have

  • Exposure to data center environments
  • Familiarity with bash scripting
  • Experience with monitoring tools or ticketing systems

Why This Role Rocks

  • Real world Linux experience
  • Exposure to enterprise infrastructure
  • Clear growth path into mid level engineering
  • No ego environment, just engineers who like building and fixing things
