What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior CS Core Network Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior CS Core Network Engineer, you need deep expertise in mobile core network architecture, signaling protocols (such as SS7, SIP, and Diameter), and a relevant engineering degree. Experience with core network equipment (e.g., Ericsson, Huawei, Nokia), network monitoring tools, and certifications like CCNP or vendor-specific credentials are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help you collaborate with cross-functional teams and troubleshoot complex issues. These skills ensure reliable network performance, rapid resolution of outages, and the successful implementation of new services in telecom environments.

How does a Senior CS Core Network Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during network upgrades or optimizations?

As a Senior CS Core Network Engineer, you will frequently collaborate with teams such as radio network engineers, transmission specialists, and IT support during network upgrades or optimization projects. This collaboration involves joint planning sessions, troubleshooting calls, and integrating solutions to ensure seamless voice and data services. You’ll often act as a technical lead, coordinating with vendors and internal stakeholders to implement changes with minimal service disruption. Effective communication and documentation are key, as you’ll need to translate complex core network requirements into actionable tasks for other teams.

What are Senior CS Core Network Engineers?

Senior CS Core Network Engineers are experienced professionals who design, implement, and maintain the core elements of a telecommunications network, specifically the Circuit Switched (CS) core. They ensure reliable voice and data communication by managing network components such as MSCs (Mobile Switching Centers), HLRs (Home Location Registers), and gateways. Their responsibilities also include troubleshooting, optimizing network performance, integrating new technologies, and supporting large-scale network upgrades. Typically, these engineers work closely with other network teams and vendors to maintain service quality and network security.

What is the difference between Senior Cs Core Network Engineer vs Network Operations Center (NOC) Engineer?

This role ensures the availability, security, and performance of local and wide area networks that support students, faculty, and staff across a diverse and international campus footprint. The Senior Network Engineer leads complex technical initiatives, provides escalation support, and plays a key role in developing and documenting network standards, configurations, and operational procedures.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities*
Network Infrastructure Implementation and Support
  • Install, configure, and support core network equipment including routers, switches, wireless LAN controllers, and DNS/DHCP servers.
  • Manage and maintain enterprise wireless infrastructure, ensuring reliable coverage, capacity, and performance across all campuses.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex network issues, including those escalated from Tier 2 support.

Monitoring, Optimization, and Documentation
  • Continuously monitor network performance using network management systems and analytics tools; proactively identify and remediate performance bottlenecks.
  • Design, maintain, and update network documentation, including system configuration guides and topology diagrams.
  • Standardize configuration templates and leverage automation to deploy and manage network resources more efficiently.

Security and Compliance
  • Experience with next-generation firewall platforms (e.g., Cisco, Fortinet) in enterprise environments, including policy management, VPNs, and threat prevention.
  • Apply firmware updates, patches, hotfixes, and service packs in alignment with security policies and change control procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with university IT policies and industry best practices for secure network operations.

Project Leadership and Vendor Coordination
  • Lead or support network infrastructure projects, including planning, procurement, implementation, and documentation.
  • Coordinate with subcontractors and external consultants; manage relationships with vendors and lead regular business reviews.

Team Collaboration and Mentorship
  • Mentor junior engineers and serve as a technical escalation point within the team.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams on IT initiatives and university-wide technology projects.

Operational Readiness and Support Coverage
  • Provide off-hours support, as needed, for high-severity network or voice system incidents that significantly impact university operations, ensuring timely restoration of services.
  • Participate in incident response and escalation efforts in collaboration with IT team members, providing guidance and support as appropriate.
  • Maintain detailed records in accordance with change management, incident tracking, and asset inventory standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director and/or Manager of Network Services.

Secondary Duties and Responsibilities*
