The Senior Medical Editor is responsible for the accurate and timely editing of all assigned jobs/projects for health brands. Workload permitting, this editorial position assists fellow editors with projects than those individually assigned. The Senior Medical Editor also works closely with the Director of Medical Editing to facilitate workload coverage during product launches, label updates, and other high-level brand events. As their brands' subject matter expert, the Senior Medical Editor should excel at making confident decisions for the best interests of their teams.
Responsibilities:
- Acts as primary editor for 1 or more larger, more complex health brands (or portfolio), as well as support for the department as a whole as needed
- Serves as lead editor during high-level brand events, including product launches and label updates
- Edits print and digital health brand tactics, as well as internal agency materials, reviewing for sense, spell, grammar, brand style, readability, consistency, and context within each job and all related jobs, providing clear, concise, and thorough comments and mark-ups
- Ensures that copy makes sense at all stages (manuscript, layout, mechanical, final reads, builds)
- Fact checks data using provided references, annotations, and general science and math competency
- Uses own knowledge and experience to confirm brand style decisions
- Attends status, hot sheet, and kick-off meetings for assigned brands as needed; offers solutions for day-to-day challenges (ie timelines, process)
- Creates and updates style guides for all assigned brands
- Develops good relationships within their specific brands and other departments and works as subject matter expert with their brand team
- Prioritizes projects efficiently and completes the work in an accurate and timely manner
- Operates within agency processes and procedures and demonstrates proficiency with internal workflow system
- Recognizes problems and provides practical solutions to supervisor and/or team members that demonstrate common sense and editorial practicality
- Arranges for back-up coverage when unavailable or out of the office
- Confirms deadlines and alerts team members of potential difficult deadlines
- Remains flexible and focused in an environment of changing circumstances
- As opportunities arise, assist in the training and guidance of Associate Medical Editors and Medical Editors with all aspects of editorial decision-making
- As opportunities arise, directly manage resources as assigned
Education and Experience:
- Minimum of a bachelor's degree in English or related field
- Strong command of the English language; excellent writing skill
- Minimum of 4 years of experience in a healthcare agency or related industry
- Experience verifying data via primary, annotated references
- Utilizes proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation
- Strong experience verifying data via primary, annotated references to check facts, charts, and chart data
- Possesses a thorough knowledge of latest edition of the AMA Style Guide and has a familiarity with FDA regulations for promotional pieces
- Experience with digital documents and routing systems is also required
This role is based in New York City. The salary range for this position is $95,000 to $100,000. Where an employee or prospective employee is paid within this range will depend on, among other factors, actual ranges for current/former employees in the subject position; the associated discipline; market considerations; budgetary considerations; tenure and standing with the company (applicable to current employees); as well as the employee's/applicant's background, pertinent experience, and qualifications.$90,000-$100,000
