Job description

The Controller is a key financial leadership position responsible for overseeing the day-to-day accounting operations of the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center. Reporting to the Executive Director of Finance and working closely with the CFO, the Controller ensures the integrity of financial records, maintains strong internal controls, and delivers timely and accurate financial reporting. This is a hybrid position with 1-2 days working from home.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Financial Reporting & Accounting Operations
• Direct and oversee all general accounting functions.
• Manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close process.
• Prepare and review monthly financial statements and management reports.
• Ensure compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.
• Maintain the integrity of the general ledger and chart of accounts.
• Oversee account reconciliations.
Internal Controls & Compliance
• Monitor compliance with regulatory requirements.
• Support Form 990 and other regulatory filings.
Audit & External Reporting
• Support the annual audit process.
• Coordinate audit schedules and requests.
• Support lender, board, and regulatory reporting.
Leadership & Team Management
• Supervise the Senior Director of Finance and Senior Accountant.
• Development of staff.
• Promote collaboration and accountability.
Budgeting, Analysis & Strategic Support
• Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning.
• Assist with cash flow forecasting and financial analysis.
• Participate in strategic initiatives and system implementations.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required. CPA preferred.
  • 8–10 years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Nonprofit and healthcare experience preferred.
  • Strong GAAP, ERP, Excel, Oracle NetSuite, analytical, and leadership skills.
