Job description

Controller

Real Ceilings | Tampa, FL (on-site) | Full-time | Reports to the COO

About Real Ceilings

Real Ceilings is one of Tampa Bay’s leading commercial ceiling contractors. Since 1989, we’ve installed acoustical, wood, and specialty metal ceiling systems in some of the region’s most visible projects — hospitals, universities, government facilities, and Tampa International Airport — working alongside general contractors like Skanska, DPR, The Beck Group, and Brasfield & Gorrie. We’ve built a reputation for accurate estimating, responsible project management, and quality work, and we’re building the leadership team to match our growth.

About the Role

We’re hiring a senior Controller to own the accounting and finance function. You’ll lead our small accounting team (AP, AR, and HR support) and report directly to the COO. Your job is to give the leadership team accurate, timely financial visibility and to make sure every job’s profitability is known while there’s still time to act on it.

This is a leadership team position — not a back-office bookkeeping seat. You’ll sit alongside the CEO and COO in leadership meetings, bring the financial perspective to company decisions on pricing, hiring, equipment, and growth, and be expected to speak up with a point of view, not just report the numbers.

Construction accounting experience is essential. You need to be fluent in percentage-of-completion revenue recognition and comfortable owning a monthly WIP schedule end to end.

What You’ll Own

  • WIP and revenue recognition. Prepare and maintain the monthly work-in-progress schedule: percentage-of-completion calculations, over/under billings, cost-to-complete estimates, and change order tracking. Review WIP with project managers monthly so estimates stay honest.

  • Job costing. Maintain accurate job cost records — labor, materials, subcontractors — so gross margin is reliable by job, project manager, and period, and margin fade is caught early.

  • Monthly close and reporting. Run the monthly and annual close with financials delivered by the 5th business day. Present trends, cash flow, and job performance to the leadership team and recommend action, not just report numbers.

  • Cash flow and forecasting. Forecast cash weekly, project working capital needs 4–6 quarters out, and build the annual operating budget with input from department managers.

  • Team leadership. Lead, train, and develop the accounting team through a daily huddle and weekly one-on-ones. Build people who own their work — respond to mistakes with training, not micromanagement.

  • Compliance and outside relationships. Manage relationships with our CPA firm, tax advisors, bank, and insurance providers. Keep us current on tax, licensing, and employment requirements, and support insurance and payroll audits.

  • Systems and process. Improve accounting processes, controls, and software so the function scales with the company. Plexxis is our accounting software — prior experience is not required.

What You Bring

Required

  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 3+ years in construction (subcontractor experience a strong plus)

  • Hands-on mastery of percentage-of-completion accounting and WIP schedule preparation

  • Experience owning a monthly close and producing GAAP financial statements

  • Job cost accounting experience, including labor burden and committed cost tracking

  • Experience leading and developing a small accounting team

  • Proficiency with construction accounting software

Preferred

  • CPA or CCIFP (Certified Construction Industry Financial Professional)

  • Experience with AIA billing, retainage, lien waivers, and certified payroll

  • Experience improving or implementing accounting systems

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base salary: $140,000–$160,000, depending on experience

  • Performance bonus: [to be finalized]

  • Benefits:

  • 401(k) with company match (after 1 year)

  • Health, dental, vision, and life insurance

  • Paid time off and parental leave

  • Professional development and growth opportunities

  • Professional development assistance

Real Ceilings is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, veteran status, or any other protected characteristic.

Company Description

A specialty ceiling company built around four principles. Not four hundred service lines.

We don't do everything. We do ceilings — the complex ones, the specialty ones, the scopes that require a contractor who actually knows what they're doing above the grid line. And we do them according to a set of values that aren't aspirational. They're operational.
R — Responsibility
We own our scope. Fully. From the first estimate to the final close-out punchlist, the work is ours — and so is the outcome. No blame-shifting. No change order surprises. No hand-holding required.
E — Efficiency
Construction is a margin business. We run lean operations, accurate estimates, and job sites that move. Because a general contractor's schedule is the only schedule that matters.
A — Autonomy
We put experienced, accountable people in the field and trust them to lead. Our superintendents don't wait for direction — they anticipate problems, coordinate trades, and make decisions that keep your project moving.
L — Leadership
Every person on a Real Ceilings job site is expected to lead their portion of the work. Not manage it — lead it. Own it. Improve it. Hand it off better than they found it.
