Job description

Controller Consultant Bay Area, CA

Compensation: $150,000 to $180,000 base salary, depending on experience
Location: Bay Area, CA | Hybrid and Client Facing
Employment Type: Full Time

NOW CFO is seeking an experienced Controller Consultant to provide senior level accounting and financial leadership to businesses throughout the Bay Area.

This is an opportunity for an accomplished Controller who enjoys solving problems, working directly with executive teams, and bringing order and insight to complex accounting environments. You will step into a variety of businesses, lead critical accounting functions, improve processes, and serve as a trusted financial partner to clients.

We can be flexible on where you are based within the greater Bay Area for the right candidate. Client site needs vary by engagement, so we are open to candidates across the South Bay and East Bay, including areas such as Morgan Hill, Walnut Creek, Pleasant Hill, Pittsburg, Antioch, Vallejo, and surrounding communities.

What Youll Do
  • Serve as a Controller level financial leader for multiple client organizations
  • Lead month end and year end close, financial reporting, reconciliations, and general ledger activity
  • Partner directly with owners, CEOs, CFOs, and operational leaders on financial performance and decision making
  • Support construction and project based clients with job costing, WIP reporting, revenue recognition, project margins, budgeting, and cash flow
  • Prepare and review accurate GAAP compliant financial statements
  • Strengthen accounting processes, internal controls, reporting, and financial systems
  • Identify issues quickly and implement practical solutions
  • Remain hands on when needed, including journal entries, reconciliations, schedules, and reporting
  • Support clients across industries including construction, real estate, technology, SaaS, manufacturing, professional services, distribution, and nonprofit
What Were Looking For
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • Significant Controller, Assistant Controller, or senior accounting leadership experience
  • Strong command of month end close, financial reporting, GAAP, and accounting operations
  • Meaningful construction or project accounting experience strongly preferred
  • Experience with job costing, WIP, revenue recognition, or project profitability
  • Ability to operate both strategically and hands on
  • Strong executive presence and client communication skills
  • Experience navigating different companies, systems, industries, or accounting environments
  • Comfortable working directly with clients and traveling to Bay Area client locations as engagements require
The Profile That Tends to Thrive Here

You may be a strong fit if you have reached the Controller level and want something broader than managing the same accounting operation year after year.

Our strongest consultants can walk into an unfamiliar business, understand what is working and what is not, build credibility with leadership, and quickly take ownership of the accounting function. They are equally comfortable discussing financial performance with an executive team and rolling up their sleeves to solve an issue within the close.

Construction experience is highly valuable for this position, but we are especially interested in Controllers who have also worked across different industries, business models, or accounting environments.

Why NOW CFO
  • $150,000 to $180,000 base salary
  • Variety without giving up the stability of a full time role
  • Direct exposure to business owners and executive leadership
  • Opportunity to work across multiple industries and accounting environments
  • Autonomy to solve complex financial and operational challenges
  • Medical, dental, vision, and 401(k) benefits
  • A consulting environment where senior accounting experience is valued and put to use

NOW CFO is an Equal Opportunity Employer committed to creating a diverse and inclusive workplace.
