Job description

This role is with a direct client of Aprio Talent Solutions.

Role Title: Senior Controller

Location: Central Florida ( Sanford, FL)

Employment Type: Full-Time / Permanent

Client Industry: Construction

Compensation: $150,000 - $200,000 + bonus (This is a wide range and the salary is based on experience)

Summary:

Our client is a well-established construction contractor in Central Florida, seeking an experienced Controller to own the full accounting function and serve as the day-to-day financial operator for the business. This role reports to the CFO and works closely with ownership, with direct responsibility for job cost accounting, WIP reporting, draw packages, and monthly financials. It's a strong fit for someone who came up through construction accounting โ€” ideally with a public accounting foundation โ€” and wants real autonomy in a hands-on, owner-led environment.

Why It's Worth Your Time

  • High-autonomy role with direct access to the owner and CFO โ€” no layers of finance leadership above you.
  • Real opportunity for advancement to CFO role based on performance
  • Own the full financial operation for a well-established privately held construction company with a strong reputation in the Central Florida market.
  • KPI-based bonus structure in addition to base salary.
  • Family-oriented culture with consistent employee tenure and strong operational leadership.
  • Opportunity to shape internal controls, reporting processes, and financial infrastructure with real support from above.

What You'll Own

  • Manage all core accounting operations including AP/AR, payroll, job cost accounting, and cash flow.
  • Compile and review all draw packages for distribution to the CFO with real-time system updates.
  • Prepare and maintain percentage-of-completion schedules with at least monthly updates.
  • Produce accurate monthly financial statements and WIP reports.
  • Develop and maintain internal accounting controls and financial reporting standards.
  • Lead budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis.
  • Coordinate quarterly reviews, annual audits, and tax return preparation.
  • Manage state registrations, business licenses, and tax license maintenance.
  • Conduct monthly audits of residential construction activity.

Must-Haves

  • 10-15+ years of overall experience including leadership
  • 5+ years of construction accounting experience; multi-family or residential production builder background preferred.
  • Demonstrated WIP / percentage-of-completion reporting experience.
  • Construction draw process experience โ€” must be able to own this independently.
  • Strong ERP proficiency; experience with Procontractor by Viewpoint or similar construction ERP a plus.
  • Progressive management experience leading an accounting team.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • Advanced Excel skills with financial modeling capability.

Nice to Have

  • Public accounting background supporting a construction client prior to going industry.
  • CPA designation (preferred but not required).
  • Experience with contract review, GL setup, and project status summarization.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with comfort operating in a lean, owner-led business.
