What is a senior computer programmer?

Senior Computer Programmers are experienced professionals who design, write, test, and maintain complex computer software and applications. They often lead programming teams, mentor junior developers, and contribute to architectural decisions. Their responsibilities include reviewing code for efficiency and security, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring that software meets both technical and business requirements. Typically, they have several years of experience in software development and are proficient in multiple programming languages.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior computer programmer?

To thrive as a Senior Computer Programmer, you need advanced proficiency in programming languages (such as Java, Python, or C++), strong problem-solving abilities, and a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. Expertise in software development tools, version control systems (like Git), and familiarity with industry-standard frameworks is typically required, along with relevant certifications such as AWS Certified Developer or Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer Associate. Exceptional communication, leadership, and teamwork skills help you manage projects and mentor junior developers. These skills ensure you can deliver robust software solutions efficiently, drive technical innovation, and contribute effectively to team and organizational goals.

What are some typical challenges senior computer programmers face when leading project development?

Senior Computer Programmers often encounter challenges such as managing complex codebases, balancing hands-on coding with mentoring junior developers, and ensuring that projects meet both technical and business requirements. They are frequently responsible for architectural decisions, code reviews, and integrating new technologies, which requires staying current with industry trends. Additionally, effective communication and collaboration with cross-functional teams—including product managers, designers, and QA—are essential to delivering successful software solutions.

What is the difference between Senior Computer Programmer vs Software Developer?

AspectSenior Computer ProgrammerSoftware Developer

This critical role will define the architecture of a server SoC that meets demanding customer KPIs across performance, power, area, cost, reliability, security, and scalability. The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of RISC-V CPU and SoC architecture, including chiplet architecture, coherency management, memory systems, power management, RAS, security, debug, and test architecture. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills are essential for translating product requirements into clear architectural trade-offs and decisions. In this role, you will define architecture for a RISC-V server SoC, translate customer and platform requirements into measurable KPIs, and guide cross-functional architecture decisions across CPU, memory, IO, power, RAS, security, debug, and test domains.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field and 10+ years of Hardware Engineering, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related work experience. OR Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field and 9+ years of Hardware Engineering, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related work experience. • Strong understanding of RISC-V profiles and RV64 application processor requirements

  • Strong expertise in multiple architecture domains of a server SoC including AIA and IOMMU architecture

  • Experience in making PPA, cost, feature and schedule trade-offs to define product architecture

  • Strong technical documentation skills, along with excellent written and verbal communication abilities.

  • 5+ years of experience building high performance server products

  • Deep understanding of RISC-V Server SoC specification and platform enumeration and firmware requirements

  • Deep understanding of CPU architecture including virtualization extensions

  • Strong understanding of RISC-V security including confidential compute (CoVE) architecture

  • Experience in commercializing server products with proven ability to influence nextgeneration architectures

  • Strong expertise across multiple SoC architecture domains like coherency management, memory system, IO architecture, Power management and Security

  • Experience with RAS, Debug and Test architecture for datacenter products

  • Experience with ARM architecture including server architectures is a plus

  • Proven track record in delivering hyperscale data center solutions

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with chip and platform architects to define and develop Product and SoC architecture

  • Develop server roadmap and feature set across one or more architecture domains

  • Model and evaluate key server KPIs, including performance, power, area, cost, RAS, and related product trade-offs.
