Purpose

Performs activities including, but not limited to, operating and monitoring well stations and pump equipment, adding and adjusting chemicals, reading flow meters in gauges, testing water chemistry, checking and lubricating equipment, and collecting and recording operational information.  Collect and transport water samples.  Supervise treatment and assure proper monitoring and control.  Duties also include operating various mechanical equipment operating treatment facilities, answering telephones and plant house-keeping and general care of the facilities and grounds.

DOE Hourly base rate $21-$32 per hour

Accountabilities
  • Meter Service operations: some of the duties include meeting customers; reading, setting, and removing meters, performing inspections for high bills, and performing plumbing inspections, check for cross connections.
  • Distribution System Operations: Among other duties, performs outside physical labor related to the installation and maintenance of all types of piping, fire hydrants, services, and appurtenances, flushes water mains.  Performs water utility mark outs.  Routinely flush and clean water mains.  Functions in the capacity of back up to the Sr Utility Person when not available and oversee contractor staff during water mains and service installations.
  • Performs activities including, but not limited to, adding and adjusting chemical treatment systems, reading meters and gauges, making chemical tests, greasing and oiling equipment.  Operating of company water filtration and treatment plants.
  • Receives and supervises water treatment chemical deliveries.
  • Determines if equipment is operating properly and troubleshoot and correct minor electrical and mechanical equipment problems.
  • Work in a safe manner in accordance with all safety rules.  Conduct safety inspections.
  • Troubleshoot and address water related complaints.
  • Discuss with customers their water related complaints.
  • Communicate effectively with owners, employees, customers, regulatory personnel, and others.
  • Participate in after hour call rotation.
  • Respond to water system emergencies during normal business hours and after hours.

Licensing & Certifications

  • NYS Valid Drivers License
  • A NY State Health Department Grade II &D Water Operators License or higher preferred or ability to obtain within 24 months.

Work Environment:

  • Typical outdoor work environment. Work in all adverse weather conditions (i.e., rain, snow, sleet, heat).
  • Stand/walk for long periods on a daily basis.
  • May be required to climb or balance; reach with hands and arms; sit; stand; stoop, kneel, or crouch; talk and hear; smell; use hands to finger, handle, or feel.
  • Position frequently works in an outdoor environment with exposure to weather-related heat and cold, rain, wind, and related elements.
  • May be exposed to working in close quarters, high and precarious places, moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, vibration, fumes or airborne particles, infectious diseases.
  • May occasionally be required to lift/move up to 50 pounds.
  • Will be required to use appropriate personal protective equipment according to current safety standards and practices.
  • Will be required to wear appropriate footwear to be in compliance with current safety standards.
