Job description


Join one of the nation's most comprehensive academic medical centers, UChicago Medicine, as a Senior Programmer in our IT Enterprise Architecture department. This is a remote work from home opportunity, and you may be based outside of the greater Chicagoland area.
The Senior Programmer will be responsible for designing, developing, enhancing, deploying, and supporting enterprise web applications and automated solutions, with a primary focus on Python-based applications and services. The role requires strong hands-on experience with Python, REST APIs, Linux, SQL, and modern web application development, along with the ability to troubleshoot complex application and integration issues across multiple technology layers.
The Senior Programmer will work closely with business stakeholders, application teams, infrastructure, database, security, and other IT teams to translate business requirements into reliable, secure, and maintainable technical solutions.
Essential Job Functions
  • Design, develop, maintain and enhance Python-based web applications, services, scripts, and automation solutions
  • Develop backend services using Python and Node.js/Express.js and support frontend applications using Angular, JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML, and CSS.
  • Support application builds, deployments, configuration management, and release activities through Azure DevOps and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Diagnose application and integration issues using application logs, stack traces, SQL queries, HTTP responses, system logs, and operating system tools.
  • Collaborate with Infrastructure, Database, Security, Networking, Integration, and other IT teams to resolve complex technical issues.
  • Work with business analysts and stakeholders to understand requirements and translate them into technical solutions.
  • Follow organizational security, privacy, change management, coding, and application development standards.
  • Participate in code reviews, testing, quality assurance, and production support activities.
  • Integrate generative AI/LLM capabilities into applications and workflows, including LLM APIs, RAG, vector databases, and AI assisted automation where applicable.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant certification in programming, Computer science and/or healthcare, business management or information systems
  • 5+ years of professional software development experience, with strong hands-on experience developing applications using Python
  • Strong experience with Python frameworks such as Flask, FastAPI, or similar frameworks
  • Experience developing web applications using JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML, and CSS, with experience in Angular strongly preferred
  • Experience with backend development using Node.js/Express.js and/or Python-based web frameworks
  • Experience with Azure DevOps Pipelines or other DevOps platforms and applications deployment processes
  • Experience with Git, branching, pull requests, code reviews, and software development lifecycle practices
  • Experience integrating REST APIs and web services, including authentication, request/response processing, error handling, logging, and data validation
  • Minimum two years' experience in technical documentation writing
  • Proven skills in problem solving
  • Must work well in a team environment and be able to partner with both business and technical team members
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and good interpersonal skills
  • Requires strong multitasking skills; must be a self-starter and able to deliver results on a proactive and independent basis
  • Experience in a health care environment is helpful
  • Expertise in the programming language / tools used in the position
  • Experience with Kubernetes, Docker and containerization
  • Knowledge about generative AI/LLM application development, including RAG, vector databases, prompt engineering, or AI workflow automation
  • Experience with Epic/Clarity or healthcare data environments

UChicago Medicine is committed to transparency in compensation and benefits. The pay range provided reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected to be offered for the position.
The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
