Senior Computational Designer information

What is the difference between Senior Computational Designer vs Computational Designer?

AspectSenior Computational DesignerComputational Designer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Architecture, Design, or related field; experience in computational toolsBachelor's or Master's in Architecture, Design, or related field; entry to mid-level experience
Work EnvironmentDesign firms, architecture studios, engineering companiesDesign firms, architecture studios, engineering companies
ResponsibilitiesLeading complex computational projects, mentoring juniors, advanced scriptingSupporting design processes with computational tools, developing scripts

While both roles involve computational design skills, Senior Computational Designers typically handle more complex projects, lead teams, and have more experience. Computational Designers focus on supporting design tasks and developing scripts under supervision. The senior role requires greater expertise and leadership, but both work within similar environments and industries.

What is a senior computational designer?

A Senior Computational Designer is a professional who uses advanced computational tools, algorithms, and programming to solve design challenges, often in fields like architecture, engineering, or product design. They create digital models, automate design processes, and develop custom software solutions to enhance creativity and efficiency. In addition to technical proficiency, they often lead projects, mentor junior designers, and collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams. Their work helps organizations push the boundaries of design innovation and optimize workflows.

What are some common challenges faced by senior computational designers when integrating new digital tools into existing design workflows?

Senior Computational Designers often encounter challenges when integrating new digital tools, such as ensuring compatibility with legacy software, training team members with varying skill levels, and maintaining design quality and consistency throughout the transition. Additionally, balancing creativity with technical constraints can require strong communication and collaboration with both designers and engineers. Proactively addressing these challenges by fostering open dialogue, providing training, and piloting tools before full implementation can help ensure a smooth workflow integration.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior computational designer?

To thrive as a Senior Computational Designer, you need advanced proficiency in computational design principles, parametric modeling, and a relevant degree in architecture, engineering, or design. Expertise with tools like Rhino, Grasshopper, Python scripting, and BIM software, along with certifications in these platforms, is highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, creativity, and effective collaboration skills set exceptional candidates apart. These competencies are crucial for delivering innovative, efficient solutions and leading multidisciplinary teams in complex design projects.

Job description

JOB SUMMARY:

The Senior Engineer is the 4th level of progression on the Engineering Technical Career Path for individuals who have demonstrated requisite fulfillment of high-competency in engineering skills and aptitude. The position of Senior Engineer is intended for individuals who aspire to reach the highest levels of technical expertise. This role can be linked to either a specific product line to technical discipline. A suffix designating a distinction to a technical discipline or equipment line is customary (i.e. Senior Engineer, Aerodynamics or Senior Engineer, Axial Compressors.) The Senior Engineer will lead projects involving the inspection, disposition, modeling and design calculations associated with multiple equipment lines. The Senior Engineer will serve as a mentor to lesser-experienced engineers for the purpose of knowledge sharing and training in their focused area of expertise. Daily responsibilities typically involve approval of inspection results, approval of drawings and layouts, writing technical reports, performance of design calculations, electronic modeling of components, and presentation of results to a wide range of individuals both within and outside the organization. The Senior Engineer will be expected to develop new and novel approaches to problem solving by staying abreast of the latest industry trends and available technologies. Individuals will also be expected to technically lead remote projects that may include travel to other physical locations in performing field investigations, inspections or to render engineering disposition. Individuals at the Senior Engineer level are expected to have a working understanding of the field operation of equipment and relate that operation back to their design inputs.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Serve as a technical leader in the design, development, and analysis of product designs which meet the function, cost, reliability, manufacturability and safety requirements of RMS.
  2. Continuously hone engineering skills to the highest level.
  3. Provide guidance to lower-graded engineers, share knowledge and serve as mentor.
  4. Lead engineering analyses for projects to include complex designs and advanced calculations.
  5. Independently review inspection reports and render engineering dispositions in accordance with established standards.
  6. Continuously improve design techniques for efficiency and accuracy.
  7. Provide guidance to designers on 2D and 3D CAD layout creation and machine redesign.
  8. Review and approve detail design drawings and machine layouts.
  9. Exhibit high-proficiency in running engineering software such as 3D CAD modeling design software and/or specialized software particular to a specific technical discipline such as aerodynamics, Rotodynamics or Structural Analysis.
  10. Demonstrate proficiency in the fundamental technical disciplines of Rotordynamics, Structural Analysis, Aerodynamics, and possibly begin to develop an expertise in one of those areas.
  11. Be capable of leading remote field installation and start-up of equipment.
  12. Work within budgets, schedules and resources on multiple projects.
  13. Effectively communicate information across all levels of the organization as well as externally to customers and the industrial community.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Demonstrated proficiency with the engineering technical disciplines of RMS product lines.
  2. Proficiency with fundamental design aspects and operation of the full range of RMS' entire product line.
  3. Demonstrated proficiency with specialized design tools and software utilized within RMS. With specialization in at least one notable technical discipline.
  4. Proven track record in meeting deadlines & commitments.
  5. Exceptional problem solving, organizational and analytical skills.
  6. Strong project leadership skills.
  7. Mechanical aptitude for machinery and ability to create or offer improvements to drawings, engineering standards, inspection reports and other service-related documents.
  8. Ability to manage multiple projects and establish priorities and schedules.
  9. Independently make decisions consistent with knowledge/experience level.
  10. Ability to communicate very effectively in speech and in writing.

JOB REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Education: 4 year Engineering Degree (mechanical preferred). Advanced degree is beneficial.
  2. Training Requirements: High proficiency with solid modeling software (Soldworks preferred), computational analytical tools (such as ANSYS), specialized RMS design application software, and general office software (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
