Senior Computational Designer information

What is a senior computational designer?

A Senior Computational Designer is a professional who uses advanced computational tools, algorithms, and programming to solve design challenges, often in fields like architecture, engineering, or product design. They create digital models, automate design processes, and develop custom software solutions to enhance creativity and efficiency. In addition to technical proficiency, they often lead projects, mentor junior designers, and collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams. Their work helps organizations push the boundaries of design innovation and optimize workflows.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior computational designer?

To thrive as a Senior Computational Designer, you need advanced proficiency in computational design principles, parametric modeling, and a relevant degree in architecture, engineering, or design. Expertise with tools like Rhino, Grasshopper, Python scripting, and BIM software, along with certifications in these platforms, is highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, creativity, and effective collaboration skills set exceptional candidates apart. These competencies are crucial for delivering innovative, efficient solutions and leading multidisciplinary teams in complex design projects.

What are some common challenges faced by senior computational designers when integrating new digital tools into existing design workflows?

Senior Computational Designers often encounter challenges when integrating new digital tools, such as ensuring compatibility with legacy software, training team members with varying skill levels, and maintaining design quality and consistency throughout the transition. Additionally, balancing creativity with technical constraints can require strong communication and collaboration with both designers and engineers. Proactively addressing these challenges by fostering open dialogue, providing training, and piloting tools before full implementation can help ensure a smooth workflow integration.

What is the difference between Senior Computational Designer vs Computational Designer?

AspectSenior Computational DesignerComputational Designer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Architecture, Design, or related field; experience in computational toolsBachelor's or Master's in Architecture, Design, or related field; entry to mid-level experience
Work EnvironmentDesign firms, architecture studios, engineering companiesDesign firms, architecture studios, engineering companies
ResponsibilitiesLeading complex computational projects, mentoring juniors, advanced scriptingSupporting design processes with computational tools, developing scripts

While both roles involve computational design skills, Senior Computational Designers typically handle more complex projects, lead teams, and have more experience. Computational Designers focus on supporting design tasks and developing scripts under supervision. The senior role requires greater expertise and leadership, but both work within similar environments and industries.

Job description

ICON is looking to add a Senior Architect / Senior Designer to the Design Build team. As part of a small, passionate, and accomplished team, you will design, evaluate, and deliver world-class high-performance buildings using ICONโ€™s technology set. As an ICONIC, you will be a leader and direct contributor to the development of entirely novel approaches to high-performance buildings and you will have the opportunity to work with your team to advance humankindโ€™s ability to provide dignified, affordable, resilient, and sustainable shelter to the world. This role is can be based at ICONโ€™s Austin, TX campus or ICON's Miami, FL campus and will report to the VP of Building Design.

Responsibilities
  • Contribute to the development of ICONโ€™s concrete 3D-printed wall system to maximize human comfort, safety, experience, and sustainability
  • Lead project teams in the development and coordination of comprehensive drawing packages across all design stages, ensuring adherence to ICONโ€™s architectural standards, client requirements, and project timelines
  • Produce drawings and diagrams to ensure that the design intent established during concept development is maintained through subsequent phases of design and construction.
  • Develop construction documents, wall assembly drawings, and building envelope details, with a focus on window and door systems, waterproofing, and weatherization
  • Develop construction diagrams to effectively communicate construction sequencing for successful integration of building envelope components and building systems (mechanical, electrical, plumbing) in the field
  • Collaborate with architects, engineers, and building & material science departments to determine best practices for achieving effective weatherization, resilient design, and high thermal performance of the printed wall system
  • Assist in the experimentation of innovative wall profiles and configurations for future application in projects
  • Review consultant drawings and details to ensure a successful interface between the 3D-printed walls and any nonโ€‘printed element of the building.
  • Coordinate with software engineers, print technicians, and construction operations to ensure successful implementation of wall construction in the field
Minimum Qualifications
  • 8+ years of experience in complex, multiโ€‘disciplinary design projects
  • Professional degree in Architecture from an accredited institution
  • Proficiency in Revit, Rhino, Google and Adobe Suites.
  • Experience coordinating all phases of design (schematic design, design development, construction documents, and construction administration) with all disciplines (civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing)
  • Experience producing and organizing construction documents for complex projects, with an emphasis on integrating building systems
  • Strong experience in Construction Administration, including RFI and submittal review, and other general constructionโ€‘related correspondence
  • Working knowledge of the International Residential (IRC) and Building (IBC) codes, ADA guidelines, Fair Housing Act (FHA), principles of concrete design & construction, construction specifications, and test methods and standards associated with the testing of building envelope systems (AAMA/ASTM)
  • Desire to work with a highly collaborative team, on a quickly evolving product, and in a fastโ€‘paced environment
  • Proactive problemโ€‘solving skills, strong organizational skills, and ability to multitask
  • Interest in sustainable design, curiosity for novel architectural technologies, and desire to perfect the craft of construction
Preferred Skills and Experience
  • Licensure not required, we support candidates pursuing certification.
  • Familiarity with parametric and computational design tools (e.g., Grasshopper, Dynamo) to explore and optimize complex forms, workflows, or performance outcomes.
  • Demonstrated experience in research and development environments, particularly contributing to prototype testing, materials research, or novel building systems.
  • Ability to develop and manage BIM standards and digital workflows for interdisciplinary collaboration and construction documentation.
  • Experience collaborating with or managing external consultants, including structural engineers, sustainability experts, and testing labs.
  • Experience leading and delivering projects that integrate emerging construction technologies, such as 3D printing, robotics, prefab, or modular construction.
  • Familiarity with code compliance testing protocols, ICCโ€‘ES reports, or material certification processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate independently and effectively in fastโ€‘paced, iterative designโ€‘build environments.
