What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior cold forming engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Cold Forming Engineer, you need advanced knowledge of materials science, metal forming processes, and mechanical engineering principles, typically supported by a bachelor's or master's degree in engineering. Expertise in CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), simulation tools (like DEFORM or Forge), and familiarity with industry standards and certifications (such as Six Sigma or ISO) are commonly required. Strong problem-solving skills, leadership, and effective communication set top performers apart in cross-functional teams. These skills ensure the design, optimization, and quality production of cold-formed components, driving efficiency and product excellence in manufacturing environments.

What are some of the key challenges senior cold forming engineers face when optimizing production processes, and how can they address these challenges?

Senior Cold Forming Engineers often encounter challenges related to balancing process efficiency with product quality, especially when working with new materials or complex geometries. They must frequently troubleshoot tooling issues, minimize material waste, and ensure consistent output while adhering to tight tolerances. Addressing these challenges involves close collaboration with design, quality, and maintenance teams, as well as leveraging advanced simulation software and continuous process improvement methodologies. Staying updated on industry trends and investing in ongoing professional development can also help engineers overcome production hurdles more effectively.

What is the difference between Senior Cold Forming Engineer vs Cold Forming Technician?

AspectSenior Cold Forming EngineerCold Forming Technician

Job description

Amsted Automotive is looking for a Cold forming Engineers Specializing in Design and/or Process to support continued growth across our Burgess Norton and SMW divisions.ย

We offer opportunities to be based in either:
โ€ข Michigan (Belleville and Taylor)
โ€ข Illinois (Geneva)

Why Amsted Automotive?

We are not a typical fastener manufacturer.

  • We specialize in large-scale cold forming, starting at 18 mm and extending beyond 50 mm+
  • Across our divisions, we operate one of the largest collections of large cold formers in the industry
  • Our product portfolio spans automotive and earthmoving applications

"We are looking for engineers who want to push the limits of cold forming, not just maintain the status quo."

What Youโ€™ll Do

  • Support new product launches from quoting through full production release
  • Provide hands-on troubleshooting and support for current production on the shop floor
  • Lead and drive continuous improvement initiatives (we donโ€™t accept โ€œgood enoughโ€)
  • Recommend and execute capital investments, including faster machines and quick-change tooling strategies
  • Collaborate across engineering, operations, and leadership teams

Note: This is an on-site role. A strong presence on the shop floor is required.

What Youโ€™ll Need to Succeed

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering
  • 5โ€“10 years of experience in Cold Forming, Hot Forming, or Forging
    • Including tool design and manufacturing support
  • Ability to effectively communicate from the shop floor to senior leadership
  • CAD experience (Solid Edge, SolidWorks, Pro-E, or similar)
  • Experience with DEFORM and/or SAP is a plus

Additional Considerations

  • Willingness to travel and support multiple locations
  • Spanish or Italian language skills are a plus
  • Must be comfortable working in a hands-on manufacturing environment
    • This role requires time on the shop floorโ€”not just desk work
  • Candidates outside the immediate areas are encouraged to applyโ€”we are open to flexible solutions
