What is a senior cloud systems engineer?

Senior Cloud Systems Engineers are experienced IT professionals who design, implement, and maintain cloud infrastructure for organizations. They are responsible for deploying scalable, secure, and reliable cloud solutions, often using platforms like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud. In addition to managing cloud resources, they troubleshoot issues, optimize performance, and ensure compliance with security standards. Senior Cloud Systems Engineers also mentor junior staff and collaborate with other teams to support business objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior cloud systems engineer?

To thrive as a Senior Cloud Systems Engineer, you need deep expertise in cloud infrastructure, system architecture, and automation, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with cloud platforms (such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud), infrastructure-as-code tools (like Terraform or CloudFormation), and relevant certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Solutions Architect) is essential. Strong problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills help you effectively design solutions and work with cross-functional teams. These competencies are crucial for ensuring scalable, secure, and reliable cloud environments that meet organizational needs.

What are some typical challenges a senior cloud systems engineer may face when migrating legacy systems to the cloud?

Migrating legacy systems to the cloud often presents challenges such as compatibility issues, data migration complexities, and ensuring minimal downtime. Senior Cloud Systems Engineers must assess legacy applications for cloud readiness, design migration strategies that address security and compliance concerns, and coordinate closely with development and operations teams to troubleshoot unforeseen issues. Effective communication and detailed planning are crucial to ensure a smooth transition and to optimize system performance post-migration.

Job description

Senior Cloud Engineer (Cloud Systems Integration Lead)
Indigo Industries, LLC — Arlington, VA (on-site, ~15–25% travel), open to Hybrid/Remote
Clearance: Secret
Salary: $160,000 – $200,000 What you'll do
Indigo Industries supports APEX, a DoD experimentation program that puts new technologies in front of warfighters and measures how they perform. We're hiring a hands-on cloud engineer to lead how APEX's knowledge- and data-management tools get deployed into the government's classified cloud environments (JCDE / Morpheus). You'll be the technical lead who makes the integration actually work — architecting the deployment, standing up secure pipelines, and serving as the go-to engineer at experimentation sites. Core responsibilities
• Architect and deploy APEX cloud capabilities into classified environments, including edge compute integration.
• Build and manage secure CI/CD pipelines and network layouts across high- and low-side environments.
• Drive the security and compliance path — RMF, ATO lifecycle, and frameworks like NIST, FedRAMP, and CMMC.
• Integrate with external DoD networks and databases: APIs, data schemas, feature requests.
• Provide on-site technical support and SME guidance at experimentation locations.
• Translate mission requirements into technical specs for enterprise IT partners. What you need (required)
• Active TS/SCI clearance • 8+ years in cloud/systems engineering (strong candidates with 5+ years and direct DoD experience considered).
• Hands-on experience with AWS and/or Azure in classified environments.
• Proven experience with DoD RMF, ATO, and DevSecOps processes.
• IAT/IAM Level II or III cert (Security+, CISSP, or CISM).
• Bachelor's in Computer Science, IT, Cybersecurity, or related field. Nice to have
• A cloud architecture cert (AWS Solutions Architect, AWS DevOps Engineer, Azure Solutions Architect Expert, or Google Professional Cloud Architect).
• Experience with Test & Evaluation or Mission Engineering environments.
• Familiarity with DoD database management and data architecture for knowledge-management tools. Why work for Indigo?
At Indigo Industries, you'll do hands-on technical work on a mission that matters — and we back that up with benefits that support your life outside of it: -Paid time off — all federal holidays plus three weeks of accrued paid vacation.
-Employer-paid health insurance — Indigo currently covers the individual health insurance premium for eligible employees after a 30-day waiting period. Full plan details, including health coverage and available dental and vision options, are provided at hire.
-Retirement savings — SIMPLE IRA with up to 3% employer matching after a 30-day waiting period.
