What is a senior cloud engineer?

Senior Cloud Engineers are experienced IT professionals who design, implement, and manage cloud computing solutions for organizations. They are responsible for overseeing cloud infrastructure, ensuring security, optimizing performance, and supporting cloud-based applications. These engineers often work with platforms like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, and may lead teams or projects to migrate, maintain, or scale cloud environments. Their expertise includes automation, networking, and troubleshooting complex cloud issues. In addition, they collaborate closely with other IT teams to align cloud strategies with business objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior cloud engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Cloud Engineer, you need deep expertise in cloud architecture, networking, security, and automation, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field and several years of industry experience. Familiarity with major cloud platforms (such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud), infrastructure-as-code tools (like Terraform or CloudFormation), and relevant certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Solutions Architect) is highly valued. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and leadership abilities help you manage complex projects and collaborate with cross-functional teams. These competencies are crucial for designing robust, scalable cloud solutions and ensuring seamless business operations in dynamic environments.

What are some common challenges senior cloud engineers face when migrating legacy applications to the cloud?

Senior Cloud Engineers often encounter challenges such as compatibility issues between legacy systems and cloud platforms, data migration complexities, and ensuring minimal downtime during the transition. They must also address security and compliance concerns, re-architect applications for scalability, and optimize costs. Effective communication with stakeholders and collaboration with development, security, and operations teams are critical to overcoming these obstacles successfully.

Job description

Role: Senior Cloud Engineer/Architect โ€“ Azure (Operations-Focused)
Contract Length: Contract-to-Hire (CTH), 6-month initial term
Location: Major preference for local Denver candidates, open to remote (preference for MST, but will consider CST and PST, must work MST hours)

Note: This is a W2 only role โ€” C2C, C2H will not be considered

Position Overview
Seeking a Senior Cloud Engineer/Architect with deep Microsoft Azure expertise to help enhance and stabilize its cloud environment while providing hands-on operational support. This position is being added to supplement an overstretched internal team and support the evolution of the organizationโ€™s cloud strategy toward a future-state "Cloud 2.0" model. The ideal candidate combines strategic architectural experience with a willingness to actively contribute to daily administration and operational responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
  • Evaluate the current Azure environment and identify architectural gaps, risks, and modernization opportunities aligned with the Cloud 2.0 vision.
  • Design and assist with enhancements to identity and access management, including Conditional Access policies, Privileged Identity Management (PIM), and application registrations.
  • Support Azure Key Vault administration, secrets management, and security hardening initiatives.
  • Work alongside the internal security team as responsibility for identity and access controls continues to transition and mature.
  • Deliver senior-level operational support throughout the Azure ecosystem, with a strong emphasis on hands-on execution rather than advisory work alone.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to existing Azure team members while helping alleviate operational workload.
  • Collaborate closely with infrastructure leadership and cross-functional technology teams on ongoing cloud initiatives.
Required Qualifications
  • Extensive experience serving as a Senior Azure Cloud Architect or Infrastructure Architect.
  • Strong hands-on expertise with:
    • Conditional Access Policies
    • Privileged Identity Management (PIM)
    • Application Registrations
    • Azure Key Vault
    • Proven ability to operate effectively in both strategic architecture and day-to-day operations roles.
    • Experience supporting large enterprise environments with complex cloud landscapes and limited internal resources.
    • Excellent communication skills with the ability to partner across security, infrastructure, and business teams.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience helping organizations evolve from a reactive cloud operating model to a structured, future-state cloud strategy.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing environments or large-scale industrial enterprises.
