Position Summary:

University Information Services (UIS) provides enterprise technology services and application platforms to the University of Colorado's four campuses and the Office of the President. UIS is committed to excellence in customer service, technical expertise, and the development of enterprise applications responsible for supporting CU's students, faculty, human resources employees, finance employees, and others.

The Principal Cloud Application Engineer is a senior technical role responsible for the design, development, and governance of enterprise cloud-based integration and messaging solutions within distributed computing environments. This position provides technical expertise across integration initiatives, translating complex business and system requirements into scalable, secure, and highly available software solutions that enable reliable data exchange among enterprise and campus applications.

The role leads the planning and implementation of enterprise integration frameworks, event-driven and messaging solutions, and automated software delivery practices, ensuring adherence to established standards for security, performance, reliability, and operational readiness. The Principal Cloud Application Engineer collaborates closely with campus stakeholders, technical teams, and leadership to guide solution design, establish integration standards, and support modernization efforts

This position reports to the Assistant Director of Integrations and is exempt from the State of Colorado Classified Staff system.

Where You Will Work:

Applicants must be Colorado residents or able to relocate to Colorado within a month of starting employment with University of Colorado System Administration.

This role is eligible to work remotely within Colorado.

Please note, leadership may adjust in-office work requirements with a minimum of three months' notice before any change can be implemented.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

Platform Engineering, Delivery, Governance, and Technical Direction (60%)

  • Plan, configure, deliver, and govern cloud-based integration, messaging, and software delivery platforms, including environment configuration, access control, monitoring, and operational readiness. 
  • Establish and enforce standards for reliability, performance, security, testing, and automated software delivery across enterprise platforms. 
  • Design and oversee CI/CD pipelines, quality assurance strategies, and DevOps practices to ensure consistent, secure, and efficient solution delivery. 
  • Provide technical direction by defining integration frameworks, guiding solution design decisions, and collaborating with stakeholders to integrate AI-enabled or data-driven services in alignment with enterprise governance and security standards.

Enterprise Integration Design & Development (40%)

  • Design, develop, and support enterprise application integration solutions within cloud-based and distributed environments. 
  • Translate complex business and system requirements into scalable, secure, and highly available integration solutions using middleware, service-oriented, and event-driven design patterns. 
  • Implement and maintain APIs, data transformations, orchestration workflows, and distributed messaging solutions to enable reliable data exchange across enterprise systems. 
  • Support the full Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC), including solution design, development, testing, deployment, and post-production support.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer or Electrical Engineering, or a related IT field plus three (3) years of progressively responsible experience as a Systems Engineer/Architect, DevOps/Platform Engineer, or Integrations Developer (or a similar position) designing and delivering large-scale enterprise on-prem and cloud-based solutions.
    or
  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer or Electrical Engineering, or a related IT field plus five (5) years of progressively responsible experience as a Systems Engineer/Architect, DevOps/Platform Engineer, or Integrations Developer (or a similar position) designing and delivering large-scale enterprise on-prem and cloud-based solutions.

Progressively responsible experience must include:

  • Three (3) years of experience in:
    • planning, designing, building, and supporting cloud-based integration solutions using enterprise integration platforms(e.g. MuleSoft CloudHub or Boomi);
    • integrating systems such as Salesforce, Oracle PeopleSoft, Learning Management Systems using standard Integration patterns; and
    • maintaining CI/CD automation using automated software delivery DevOps frameworks (e.g. Jenkins, GitLab CI/CD).
  • Two (2) years of experience in:
    • providing technical direction, enforcing API governance, coding standards, testing standards, reusable frameworks, and integration best practices across enterprise teams;
    • mentoring junior staff and work cross-functionally with analysts and architects; and
      designing and governing enterprise messaging and data streaming platforms (e.g. Kafka, RabbitMQ).
  • One (1) year of experience integrating AI-enabled services into enterprise software applications
