What is a senior cloud data engineer?

Senior Cloud Data Engineers are experienced professionals who design, build, and maintain data processing systems on cloud platforms. They are responsible for creating scalable, secure, and efficient data pipelines and ensuring data is accessible for analysis and reporting. These engineers often work with tools and services from cloud providers like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, and collaborate closely with data scientists, architects, and other stakeholders. Their expertise in both cloud infrastructure and data engineering allows organizations to leverage large volumes of data for business insights.

What are some common challenges faced by senior cloud data engineers when migrating on-premises data systems to the cloud?

Senior Cloud Data Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring data integrity and security during migration, minimizing downtime, and handling compatibility issues between legacy systems and cloud platforms. They also need to optimize data pipelines for scalability and cost-effectiveness in the new environment. Close collaboration with stakeholders from IT, security, and business units is crucial to align migration goals and manage expectations throughout the process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior cloud data engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Cloud Data Engineer, you need advanced expertise in data engineering, cloud platforms (such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud), programming languages (like Python or Scala), and a strong foundation in database technologies. Proficiency with cloud-based tools (e.g., AWS Glue, Azure Data Factory), big data frameworks (such as Spark or Hadoop), and relevant certifications (like AWS Certified Data Analytics) is highly valued. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and the ability to collaborate across teams help you excel in designing and optimizing complex data solutions. These skills ensure scalable, secure, and efficient data pipelines that support business analytics and innovation.

Job Description:
Parsons is looking for a hands-on Cloud Data Engineer to join our team supporting mission-critical cloud, data, and AI-enabling technology initiatives. This position is open to candidates at multiple experience levels, from mid-career to senior. You'll help design and support cloud-based data pipelines, APIs, and modern data platforms that power advanced analytics and automation for mission-focused programs.
This is an implementation-focused role - not a traditional architecture or systems engineering position. We need someone who enjoys building, integrating, and troubleshooting real working systems.
What You'll Do:
  • Design, build, test, and support cloud-based data engineering solutions
  • Develop and maintain ETL pipelines and data workflows
  • Integrate data sources, APIs, applications, and distributed cloud services
  • Build and support data processing pipelines, database applications, and data services
  • Handle data movement, transformation, validation, and operational readiness tasks
  • Develop or integrate RESTful APIs and data-driven applications as needed
  • Partner with cloud platform, engineering, and DevSecOps teams on deployment
  • Use Git-based version control and CI/CD tooling (GitLab CI/CD, Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or similar)
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies, code reviews, testing, debugging, and documentation
  • Support deployment, configuration, and troubleshooting in Linux and cloud environments
  • Document data flows, interfaces, dependencies, and technical decisions
  • Collaborate with mission, engineering, security, and stakeholder teams on practical implementation
  • Apply secure coding and automated testing best practices throughout development
  • Help safeguard sensitive, proprietary, CUI, or classified information as required
  • Work effectively within secure, government, or defense-oriented environments

What You'll Need:
  • Hands-on experience in data engineering, data integration, or software engineering
  • Experience building ETL pipelines and data processing workflows
  • Experience integrating APIs, applications, services, or databases
  • Proficiency in a modern programming language - Python, Java, or JavaScript/TypeScript
  • Working knowledge of cloud-native data platforms and services
  • Experience developing or troubleshooting in Linux-based environments
  • Familiarity with Git and collaborative source control workflows
  • Understanding of secure coding and software engineering best practices
  • Strong troubleshooting skills across pipelines, APIs, databases, and integrations
  • Solid analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Ability to collaborate across engineering teams and adapt to shifting requirements
  • Ability to work within secure or mission-oriented environments

Nice to Have:
  • Hands-on experience with AWS cloud services
  • Experience with Databricks or similar cloud data platforms
  • Experience with GitLab CI/CD, Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or comparable CI/CD tools
  • Experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases
  • Experience with data modeling, large-scale processing, or streaming/event-driven architectures
  • Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes, or other containerization tools
  • Exposure to DevOps/DevSecOps practices
  • Experience assessing software dependencies, licensing, or supply chain security
  • Background supporting federal, defense, intelligence, or other mission-driven organizations
  • AWS certification (Developer, Solutions Architect, Data Engineer, or DevOps Engineer)
  • Active or eligible security clearance, where applicable

Security Clearance Requirement:
An active Secret security clearance is required for this position.
