What is a senior civil engineer?

Senior Civil Engineers are experienced professionals who oversee the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of infrastructure projects such as roads, bridges, buildings, and water systems. They lead teams of engineers and technicians, ensuring projects meet safety, quality, and regulatory standards. Senior Civil Engineers often manage budgets, coordinate with stakeholders, and provide technical guidance throughout the project lifecycle. Their extensive experience allows them to solve complex engineering problems and mentor junior staff.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a senior civil engineer?

To thrive as a Senior Civil Engineer, you need a solid background in civil engineering principles, project management, and a bachelor's degree in civil engineering—often supplemented by a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Expertise in design software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and project management tools, as well as familiarity with construction codes and standards, is typically required. Strong leadership, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication distinguish top performers in this role. These skills are crucial for ensuring project success, meeting regulatory requirements, and leading multidisciplinary teams on complex infrastructure projects.

What challenges do senior civil engineers face in managing large infrastructure projects?

Senior Civil Engineers often encounter challenges such as coordinating multidisciplinary teams, managing tight project deadlines, and ensuring compliance with complex regulatory requirements. Overview

As a Civil Engineering Project Manager in the Waste Management Practice for Civil & Environmental Consultants, Inc. (CEC), in our Boston, MA offices, you'll manage project teams to complete engineering tasks such as airspace and earthwork volume calculations, prepare and review technical reports, design stormwater management systems, leachate collection systems, and landfill gas collection systems, perform geotechnical analyses, as well as prepare landfill grading plans and project details and specifications.

You'll be directly responsible for developing proposals, project budgets, and schedules, managing the engineering staff, and performing quality control. In addition, you will partner with our management teams to mentor and assist in the professional development of the staff, including the performance of annual reviews and the establishment of development goals. Concurrently, our senior management teams will work with you to customize your individual career path through a variety of professional development and mentoring activities related to your project management, leadership, and business development skills.

Applicants will have an option to sit in either our Raynham, MA or Peabody, MA office locations.
