Job description

The Senior Building Engineer provides leadership, technical support, guidance and hands-on experience for the operation and maintenance of two 100,000 Sf Class A commercial office buildings.

This position is responsible for maintaining all base building systems and ensuring reliable day-to-day operations. The role requires strong technical knowledge of commercial building systems to effectively perform maintenance, troubleshooting and repairs that support optimal building performance. 

The Senior Building Engineer will promote safe working practices, and ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, standards and reporting requirements related to all maintenance activities and repairs.  The position reports directly to the Chief Building Engineer in Fairfax, Virginia.

  • Perform troubleshooting, repair, and preventive maintenance of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and life safety systems.
  • Monitor Building Automation System (BAS), and respond to alarms by investigating root causes, adjusting setpoints and modifying schedules in accordance with operational standards.
  • Prioritize and respond to service requests to ensure timely resolution.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, equipment logs, and work order documentation.
  • Assist with inventory management of spare parts, tools and maintenance supplies; recommend purchases as needed.
  • Support emergency response activities, including fire alarms, power outages and other building related incidents.
  • Assist the Chief Engineer with daily supervision of building maintenance operations and provide coverage in the Chief Engineer’s absence.
  • Ensure all work is performed safely and in compliance with company safety standards.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the Chief Building Engineer.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; trade school certification or associate degree preferred.
  • Minimum five to seven years of experience in the maintenance and operation of building equipment, preferably in commercial facilities.
  • Minimum one year of supervisory experience as a lead or senior building engineer.
  • Universal EPA 608 Certification required.
  • Proficiency with one or more BAS platforms, preferably Siemens Desigo CC
  • Possessing a current Virginia Journeyman HVACR or DC Class III License is a plus
  • Strong working knowledge of HVAC, electrical, plumbing and fire/life safety systems.
  • Familiarity with OSHA safety regulations, NFPA codes, and energy conservation best practices.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Experience using CMMS systems for work order management and proficiency in computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Strong troubleshooting, communication, and customer service skills.

Working Conditions:

  • Physical requirements include frequent standing, walking, bending, climbing ladders, lifting and working in mechanical spaces.
  • Occasional overtime, evening, or weekend work may be required to respond to emergencies or support scheduled maintenance activities.
