Senior Bioinformatics Summer Internship information

What is a senior bioinformatics summer internship?

A Senior Bioinformatics Summer Internship is a temporary, usually 8-12 week position designed for advanced undergraduate or graduate students with significant coursework or experience in bioinformatics. Interns work on research projects that involve analyzing biological data using computational tools and programming. These internships provide hands-on experience in genomics, proteomics, and other data-rich fields, and are often hosted by universities, research institutes, or biotechnology companies. Participants gain valuable skills in data analysis, programming languages like Python or R, and exposure to real-world scientific problems. This experience can help build a foundation for a future career or further study in bioinformatics or related fields.

What types of projects can I expect to work on during a senior bioinformatics summer internship?

As a Senior Bioinformatics Summer Intern, you will typically work on projects involving the analysis of large-scale biological data, such as genomics, transcriptomics, or proteomics datasets. You may be responsible for developing or optimizing computational pipelines, interpreting complex biological results, and collaborating with wet-lab scientists to support their research questions. Interns often present findings in team meetings and may contribute to publications or internal reports. This role provides an opportunity to gain hands-on experience with industry-standard bioinformatics tools and to work closely with multidisciplinary teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior bioinformatics summer intern, and why are they important?

To excel as a Senior Bioinformatics Summer Intern, you need a strong background in biology, computational analysis, and statistics, typically supported by advanced coursework or graduate-level study in bioinformatics or related fields. Familiarity with programming languages like Python or R, experience with bioinformatics tools (such as BLAST, GATK, or Bioconductor), and knowledge of data visualization platforms are highly valued. Critical thinking, effective communication, and the ability to collaborate in multidisciplinary teams are standout soft skills in this role. These capabilities ensure interns can contribute meaningfully to research projects, analyze complex biological data, and communicate findings effectively within scientific teams.

What is the difference between Senior Bioinformatics Summer Internship vs Bioinformatics Research Assistant?

AspectSenior Bioinformatics Summer InternshipBioinformatics Research Assistant
Required CredentialsUndergraduate or early graduate students, some programming experienceGraduate students or recent graduates, strong bioinformatics background
Work EnvironmentInternship programs, collaborative research teams, academic or industry labsResearch labs, academic institutions, biotech companies
Employer & Industry UsagePharmaceutical, biotech, academic research institutionsUniversities, research institutes, biotech firms

The Senior Bioinformatics Summer Internship is designed for students gaining practical experience in bioinformatics, often with limited professional responsibilities. In contrast, Bioinformatics Research Assistants typically hold more advanced credentials and contribute more independently to research projects. Both roles are valuable for career development but differ mainly in experience level and scope of responsibilities.

Job description

Job Description:

At Ferguson, sales is about more than products and transactions. It is about relationships, trust, problem solving, and showing up for customers, communities, and one another. Our Sales Internship Program is designed for students who want to learn how great customer partnerships are built from the ground up while experiencing the culture, teamwork, and career growth that make Ferguson a place associates are proud to be part of.

During this 10-week paid summer internship, you will gain hands-on experience in a local branch, learn directly from experienced sales and operations associates, and see how Ferguson helps make complex customer projects simple, successful, and sustainable. You will be part of a team that values curiosity, accountability, collaboration, and the ability to build meaningful relationships with customers and colleagues.

What You Will Experience

  • Build customer service, product knowledge, sales process, and relationship management skills through real work in a Ferguson branch.

  • Work alongside experienced sales, operations, and branch leaders who will help you understand how we serve customers and support each other as a team.

  • Spend time in the warehouse, counter, inside sales, outside sales, and branch operations to see how every role contributes to the customer experience.

  • Contribute to a sales-focused project that gives you an opportunity to solve a real business challenge and present your insights to leaders.

  • Join a one-week immersive experience at our headquarters in Newport News, VA to connect with other interns, network with leaders, and experience Ferguson's culture in action.

Who Thrives Here

  • You are currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in business, marketing, sales, or a related field and are a rising junior or senior.

  • You are available to work 10 consecutive weeks during the summer. Internship dates are June 7, 2027 through August 13, 2027.

  • You are motivated, curious, and willing to learn by jumping in, asking questions, and building relationships.

  • You enjoy working with people and understand that strong communication, follow-through, and trust are central to great customer service.

  • You are comfortable in a fast-paced environment where priorities may change and teamwork matters.

  • You are a real-world problem solver who is willing to roll up your sleeves and understand the business from the ground up.

  • You have basic proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

What Ferguson Offers

  • Hands-on experience in sales, customer relationship management, branch operations, and supply chain.

  • Guidance, coaching, and feedback from experienced Ferguson associates and branch leaders.

  • Opportunities to learn from leaders, connect with peers, and build relationships across the business.

  • A midpoint and final evaluation to help you understand your strengths, growth areas, and future career opportunities.

  • Exposure to potential full-time opportunities, including programs such as the Sales Trainee Program.

  • Competitive hourly pay of $22.50 per hour.

  • Additional benefit offerings such as medical, dental, vision coverage, and 401(k).
