What is the highest paying job in bioinformatics?

Senior bioinformatics roles that combine advanced machine learning expertise, such as Senior Bioinformatics Machine Learning Scientist or Director of Bioinformatics, tend to be among the highest paying in the field. These positions often require extensive experience, strong programming skills, and knowledge of algorithms, with salaries reaching six figures or higher depending on the organization and location.

Is AI going to replace bioinformatics?

AI is a tool that enhances bioinformatics by automating data analysis and pattern recognition, but it is not expected to fully replace the field. Senior Bioinformatics Machine Learning roles involve developing and applying AI models to biological data, requiring expertise in both biology and machine learning techniques. Human oversight remains essential for interpreting results and guiding research directions.

What is the difference between Senior Bioinformatics Machine Learning vs Bioinformatics Data Analyst?

AspectSenior Bioinformatics Machine LearningBioinformatics Data Analyst
Required CredentialsAdvanced degrees in bioinformatics, computer science, or related fields; experience with machine learningBachelor's or master's in bioinformatics, biology, or related fields; proficiency in data analysis tools
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, biotech companies, or pharma; focus on developing ML modelsData interpretation, reporting, and visualization in research or clinical settings
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in biotech, pharma, research institutions for complex data modelingCommon in healthcare, research, and biotech for data management and reporting

The main difference is that Senior Bioinformatics Machine Learning specialists focus on developing and applying machine learning models to biological data, requiring advanced technical skills. Bioinformatics Data Analysts primarily interpret and visualize data, with less emphasis on machine learning techniques.

How much does a senior bioinformatics scientist make at Illumina?

A senior bioinformatics scientist at Illumina typically earns between $100,000 and $130,000 annually, depending on experience and location. Compensation may include bonuses and stock options, and the role often requires expertise in genomics, programming, and data analysis tools like Python or R.

What is the salary of AI ML bioinformatics?

Senior Bioinformatics Machine Learning roles typically offer salaries ranging from $90,000 to $150,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Advanced skills in machine learning, programming, and bioinformatics tools can influence compensation levels.

Job description

Job Description
Location: Southeastern United States (Hybrid/Remote)
Transform Maritime Intelligence with Cutting-Edge AI/ML
Are you an experienced machine learning researcher ready to push the limits of AI in one of the toughest domains-maritime autonomy? At Tocaro Blue, your expertise in designing, training, and deploying custom ML models will directly advance our foundational perception stack, ProteusCore.
As a Senior ML Researcher, you will be the lead architect of Radar (and secondary EO/IR) models for object detection, semantic segmentation, and tracking. You'll design algorithms capable of distinguishing vessels, land, shoreline constructions, wakes, and markers in dynamic maritime environments where off-the-shelf models fall short.
Your work will fuel products used by:
โ€ข Defense customers developing USVs/ASVs for the U.S. Navy.
โ€ข Commercial OEMs bringing advanced marine ADAS and autopilot features to market.
This role is an opportunity to define the ML foundations of maritime autonomy-where perception evolves from situational awareness, to navigation assistance, to full autonomy.
What You'll Pioneer
Core ML and Autonomy Innovation
โ€ข Invent and refine custom deep learning architectures for Radar and EO/IR imagery, with an emphasis on semantic segmentation and temporal tracking, not just detection.
โ€ข Develop multi-stage ML pipelines (context + characteristic models, segmentation + classification) tailored to low-SNR Radar returns.
โ€ข Train models on proprietary large-scale datasets (millions of Radar samples and camera sequences) with design-of-experiment methods for data collection and annotation.
โ€ข Optimize and deploy models to resource-constrained edge hardware (CPU-only and ARM64 platforms), including C++ inference layers.
โ€ข Advance fusion-aware ML models that integrate Radar with EO/IR, AIS, and cartography for robust classification in GPS-denied or cluttered environments.
โ€ข Collaborate with fusion and autonomy engineers to ensure ML outputs integrate seamlessly into multi-target tracking and SLAM pipelines.
โ€ข Contribute to ML-Ops workflows: data management, large-scale training, continuous integration of new field data, and automated evaluation pipelines.
What Sets You Apart
Essential Qualifications
โ€ข Advanced degree (MS/PhD) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, or related field.
โ€ข 7+ years applying machine learning and signal processing to real-world dynamic systems (graduate research counts if directly applicable).
โ€ข Demonstrated mastery of semantic segmentation and object classification models, ideally applied to non-vision sensor modalities.
โ€ข Expert-level Python skills with ML frameworks (TensorFlow/Keras, PyTorch, or equivalent).
Preferred Expertise
โ€ข Track record of developing ML models beyond standard YOLO-style detectors, particularly for segmentation of noisy or sparse data (Radar, sonar, or medical imaging).
โ€ข Strong background in computer vision and temporal modeling (CNNs, transformers, RNNs for sequential sensor data).
โ€ข Experience deploying ML to embedded/edge platforms with optimized C++ inference.
โ€ข Knowledge of marine, automotive, or aerial robotics systems.
โ€ข Contributions to large-scale ML data pipelines: annotation strategies, dataset balancing, simulation-to-real transfer.
โ€ข Passion for pushing the boundaries of AI in GPS-denied, cluttered, and low-visibility environments.
Why Tocaro Blue?
Competitive Compensation & Growth
โ€ข $132,000-$160,000 base salary with potential equity in a rapidly growing company.
โ€ข Comprehensive benefits: 401(k) with 4% company matching, full health/dental/vision, life & disability insurance, generous PTO.
โ€ข Continuous learning via conferences, training, and professional growth.
Innovation-First Culture
โ€ข Direct impact on defining the AI backbone of maritime autonomy.
โ€ข Work on problems unsolved in automotive AI: Radar segmentation, maritime multi-object tracking, sensor fusion in GPS-denied waters.
โ€ข Collaborative environment with elite engineers and researchers.
โ€ข Hands-on field validation through monthly data collection trips at our Pensacola test facility
โ€ข A culture that balances innovation with personal growth.
