What does a senior Azure Network Engineer do?

A Senior Azure Network Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and managing complex network solutions in Microsoft Azure cloud environments. They work on configuring virtual networks, VPNs, firewalls, and network security, ensuring high availability and optimal performance for cloud-based applications. Their role also includes troubleshooting network issues, monitoring network health, and collaborating with other IT teams to support business needs. Additionally, they stay updated on the latest Azure networking technologies and best practices to provide secure and scalable solutions.

What are some common challenges faced by senior Azure Network Engineers when managing hybrid cloud environments?

Senior Azure Network Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring secure and reliable connectivity between on-premises networks and Azure, managing complex routing and firewall rules, and maintaining compliance with organizational security policies. Troubleshooting latency, bandwidth issues, and integrating legacy systems with cloud-native services can also be demanding. Close collaboration with security, application, and infrastructure teams is crucial to address these challenges and keep network operations running smoothly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior Azure Network Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Azure Network Engineer, you need deep expertise in cloud networking, Azure infrastructure, and network security, usually supported by a bachelor's degree in IT or a related field and relevant Azure certifications. Mastery of Microsoft Azure networking tools, such as Azure Virtual Network, ExpressRoute, and Network Security Groups, as well as proficiency with automation tools like PowerShell or Azure CLI, is typically required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills help you lead projects and coordinate with cross-functional teams. These skills ensure secure, scalable, and efficient network solutions that align with organizational goals and cloud best practices.

Job description

Description
Astrolab is The Lunar Operations Company. We design and build the systems and hardware the lunar economy will come to depend on — rovers, power, and data networks for sustained operations on the Moon. We are focused on the problems that must be solved before the next chapter of human exploration can scale. The Moon does not forgive untested assumptions. The people who work here know that, and they wouldn't have it any other way.

Astrolab is seeking a Senior Network Engineer to own the design, implementation, and security of our enterprise and mission critical network infrastructure. This role requires hardening networks to meet NIST 800-171/53 and integrate on-premises environments into our cloud platforms. This position reports to the IT Manager, Cloud & Infrastructure.

What you'll do:
  • Design and implement fault tolerant network architecture that aligns with NIST 800-171 and 53 frameworks
  • Deploy, configure, and maintain network, wireless, firewall infrastructure across physical offices and cloud platforms
  • Architect and manage Azure cloud networking topologies (Hub & Spoke architectures, Virtual WAN, Azure ExpressRoute, VPN Gateways)
  • Support mission operations by ensuring real-time, low-latency telemetry and video broadcast streams
  • Use tools like Ansible, Chef, or Puppet to automate network and firewall configurations
  • Monitor performance, troubleshoot issues, and optimize performance of the network environments
  • Act as the subject matter expert and primary escalation point for networking, cloud connectivity, and performance issues
  • Mentor and coach entry/mid-level engineers interested in expanding their skillsets
  • Participate in on-call rotations, troubleshoot infrastructure issues, and perform root-cause analysis (RCA) for system outages
  • Maintain clear, up-to-date documentation of architectural diagrams, deployment processes, and runbooks

What you'll bring:
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 2+ years of professional experience supporting enterprise network infrastructure
  • Experience configuring and supporting enterprise network infrastructure
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience configuring and troubleshooting routing and switching technologies
  • Experience administering enterprise firewalls
  • Experience with TCP/IP networking, including routing, switching, DNS, and DHCP
  • 6+ years of professional experience in network engineering
  • Experience supporting network infrastructure in aerospace, defense, government, finance, or other regulated industries
  • Experience administering Cisco, Juniper, Palo Alto, Aruba, Silver Peak, or equivalent enterprise networking platforms
  • Experience with BGP, OSPF, RADIUS, TACACS+, IPSec, Multicast, 802.1X, VRRP, or HSRP
  • Experience supporting cloud or hybrid-cloud networking
  • Experience with NIST/CMMC requirements
  • Experience with IaC tools
  • Relevant networking certifications
  • Experience supporting aerospace, defense, or other mission-critical environments

Benefits and Perks
  • Join a team of best-in-class engineers building the foundation of planetary surface exploration
  • Equity ownership in the company
  • Comprehensive health benefits, including medical, dental, vision, and mental health support
  • 401(k) plan with company match
  • Flexible PTO and parental leave
  • Home office set up reimbursement
  • Weekly lunch stipend, plus complimentary snacks and beverages on-site
  • Once a month social hour on-site with food and drinks
