Senior Aws Infrastructure Engineer information

What does a senior AWS infrastructure engineer do?

A Senior AWS Infrastructure Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining cloud-based systems on Amazon Web Services (AWS). They focus on building scalable, secure, and reliable infrastructure using AWS services such as EC2, S3, Lambda, and VPC. Their role includes automating deployments, monitoring performance, and ensuring best practices in security and cost optimization. They often collaborate with development teams to support application needs and troubleshoot complex infrastructure issues.

What are the typical challenges a senior AWS infrastructure engineer faces when managing large-scale cloud environments?

Senior AWS Infrastructure Engineers often encounter challenges such as optimizing cloud resource usage for cost efficiency, ensuring robust security and compliance across multiple accounts, and maintaining high availability during deployments or scaling events. Balancing the adoption of new AWS services with the stability of existing infrastructure is also common. Effective collaboration with development, security, and operations teams is crucial to address these challenges and to implement best practices in automation, monitoring, and incident response.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior AWS infrastructure engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior AWS Infrastructure Engineer, you need deep expertise in cloud architecture, automation, networking, and security, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related fields and AWS certifications. Mastery of AWS services (such as EC2, S3, Lambda), infrastructure-as-code tools (like Terraform or CloudFormation), and CI/CD systems is crucial. Strong problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills set standout professionals apart in this role. These skills and qualities are vital for designing robust, scalable cloud environments and ensuring seamless operations for mission-critical applications.

What is the difference between Senior Aws Infrastructure Engineer vs Cloud Solutions Architect?

AspectSenior Aws Infrastructure EngineerCloud Solutions Architect
CertificationsAWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate/Professional, AWS Certified SysOps AdministratorAWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate/Professional, sometimes additional certifications like AWS Certified Security Specialty
Work EnvironmentFocuses on deploying, managing, and optimizing AWS infrastructure, often in operational rolesDesigns cloud solutions, works closely with clients or internal teams to architect scalable systems
Industry UsageCommon in organizations needing infrastructure management and deploymentCommon in consulting firms, cloud architecture teams, and project planning roles

The Senior AWS Infrastructure Engineer primarily manages and optimizes AWS environments, ensuring reliable infrastructure. In contrast, a Cloud Solutions Architect designs comprehensive cloud solutions, focusing on architecture and strategic planning. Both roles require AWS certifications and cloud expertise but differ in their core responsibilities and focus areas.

Job description

About the Role

The Platform Infrastructure team at iCapital is responsible for designing, standardizing, and evolving the core infrastructure that powers our global technology stack. As Vice President, Platform Infrastructure Architecture, you will serve as a senior individual contributor architect, helping define and evolve the technical standards that underpin our Kubernetes platforms, cloud networking, edge services, and API access patterns.

This role is architecture-first, with regular hands-on involvement to validate designs through reference implementations and proof-of-concept project work . You will work closely with Platform Infrastructure engineers and application teams to ensure that platform capabilities are scalable, secure, and consistent across regions, while remaining practical to operate.

Responsibilities

  • Evolve platform architecture standards across core infrastructure domains.
  • Design and validate Kubernetes platform architecture, including cluster lifecycle, autoscaling strategies, node provisioning, and OS standards (e.g., EKS, Karpenter, Bottlerocket).
  • Define cloud networking architecture patterns, including VPC design, routing, ingress/egress, TGW design and private connectivity.
  • Own architectural guidance for edge and traffic management, including CDN, DNS, and TLS strategies (e.g., Akamai, Cloudflare).
  • Define and standardize API Gateway and north south access patterns for secure and consistent service exposure.
  • Establish and maintain multi account and multi cluster architecture standards supporting scale, isolation, and operational clarity.
  • Produce and maintain reference architectures, design documents, and architectural guardrails consumed by Platform Infrastructure engineers and application teams.
  • Review proposed platform designs and changes to ensure alignment with long term architecture strategy.
  • Stay hands on through proof of concepts, reference implementations, and technical deep dives to validate architectural decisions.
  • Partner with engineering, security, and product teams to ensure platform standards are practical, well understood, and broadly adopted.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience in platform, cloud, or infrastructure engineering roles, with demonstrated architectural responsibility.
  • Strong hands on experience designing and operating Kubernetes platforms in production environments.
  • Deep understanding of AWS infrastructure, including networking, security primitives, and managed services.
  • Experience designing cloud networking and edge architectures, including ingress/egress and traffic management.
  • Proven ability to translate complex technical requirements into clear standards and reference architectures.
  • Comfortable operating as a senior individual contributor with influence across multiple teams.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain architectural decisions to both technical and nontechnical audiences.
  • Certifications (AWS / Kubernetes) are a plus but not required.

Benefits

The base salary range for this role is $130,000 to $160,000 depending on level.  iCapital offers a compensation package which includes salary, equity for all full-time employees, and an annual performance bonus. Employees also receive a comprehensive benefits package that includes an employer matched retirement plan, generously subsidized healthcare with 100% employer paid dental, vision, telemedicine, and virtual mental health counseling, parental leave, and unlimited paid time off (PTO).

We believe the best ideas and innovation happen when we are together. Employees in this role will work in the office Monday-Thursday, with the flexibility to work remotely on Friday.
