Senior Accompanist - Theatre and Media Arts (part-time, 17.5 hours/week)
Seeking an experienced musical theatre pianist to accompany student performers, support vocal instruction, and collaborate with faculty in rehearsals, auditions, and performances. The ideal candidate has a bachelor's degree in music, at least five years of professional accompaniment experience, exceptional sight-reading and transposition skills, and thrives in a collaborative, fast-paced environment. Evening and weekend availability is required.
What you'll do in this position:
  • Accompany student singers at a high-level of proficiency (a classical foundation, an ability to match syncopation to the appropriate musical style, an ability to transpose when necessary.)
  • Accompany across the entire musical theatre repertoire.
  • Assist faculty in teaching vocal harmonies, coaching lead and ensemble singers, and leading sectionals.
  • Sight-read musical theatre and popular music for auditions, classes, and performances at a high-level of proficiency.
  • Work a varied schedule including evenings and weekend hours.

Minimum Required:
  • A firm commitment to the mission of BYU
  • Bachelor's degree in Music
  • At least five years proven experience as a rehearsal pianist, collaborative pianist, or dance accompanist in professional theatre companies, conservatories, or academic institutions.
  • Strong commitment to the AIMS of a BYU Education
  • Master complex musical theatre scores.
  • Quickly adapt to cuts, key changes, and tempo adjustments during vocal coaching auditions.
  • Exceptional ability to read full scores at a glance, transpose on the fly, and improvise from lead sheets or dance counts.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with directors, actors, dancers, and production staff.
  • Exceptional ability to handle high-pressure situations from students, staff, and faculty with emotional intelligence.
  • Excellent communication skills.

Preferred:
  • At least five years proven experience as a musical director

Pay Grade: 55
Typical Starting Pay: $44.00 to $57.00 an hour
