has an opening for the following position:
Lead Musical Artistic Director (Spring - musical)
At Waseca High School
2-3 hours per day in season (Spring)
Successful applicants will be able to:
  • Read and follow all Waseca Jr. & Sr. High School policies for activities.
  • Work with the music director and assistant director (if there is one) to pick a musical that meets the needs and capabilities of our students and musical staff, as well as adheres to Waseca's community standards.
  • Secure scripts, scores, librettos, rights, and cutting permission (if needed) for the chosen musical working with High School office staff for purchase orders.
  • File any necessary paperwork to secure rights, as well as follow-up paperwork that some companies require in musical contracts for performance.
  • Upon the completion of the production, collect, pack, and arrange for shipment all rented materials, equipment, props, costumes, set pieces, etc...
  • Secure auditorium space(s) or alternative spaces (classroom, gymnasium) within the district for auditions, practices, and performances.
  • Set audition date(s) and advertise the auditions with the students through the daily announcements and/or promotional materials posted around the school.
  • Host auditions that include an acting and music audition with the option to also have a dancing audition as well.
  • Develop a plan and procedure for auditions and execute it.
  • Run daily weekday practices.
  • Develop and communicate the schedule for practices and performances with participants.
  • Work with the music director and assistant director (if there is one) to make decisions about the pit band/orchestra.
  • Communicate with the music director to ensure that you have shared visions for the production and that your vision is something that our musicians/singers can achieve.
  • Block the movements of the actors.
  • Teach the cast blocking and work with them on movement, line delivery, and facial expressions.
  • Choreograph yourself or advise a choreographer on any dancing that may need to be performed during the musical.
  • Teach the participants the choreography for the production or advise hired/volunteer choreographer as they teach the participants.
  • Create a plan for, build and/or advise a hired/volunteer set builder, and paint the set utilizing materials within the drama department and/or through purchase while keeping in mind an economical budget.
  • Work with the office staff to gain access to and set up PO's to purchase props, costumes, and items to build/paint the set if needed while keeping in mind an economical budget.
  • Work with the Auditorium Technician to familiarize yourself with the sound and light systems, as well as the general auditorium lighting and curtains.
  • Develop a sound and lighting plan for the production with the assistance of the Auditorium Technician
  • Develop, find, and plan sound cues and music for the play and/or advise your sound technician/techie in doing so.
  • Work with the Auditorium Technician to train crew members on sound, lights, and set movement.
  • Develop and plan a costume and makeup plan for the show
  • Secure props, costumes, and makeup from the drama department storage or outside sources while keeping in mind an economical budget.
  • Supervise students at all practices and performances to ensure they behave properly in accordance with Waseca Public Schools rules and standards.
  • Create a program for the performances.
  • Create or advise and facilitate the creation of a promotional poster for the production.
  • Work with staff and participants to distribute the promotional posters throughout Waseca and ideally the surrounding communities.
  • Facilitate the setup of ticketing with the Activities Director and ensure that ticket sellers and scanners are available from the activities office.
  • Ensure that you have secured volunteers for passing out programs and serving as ushers at each performance (could be participants, parent volunteers, or assigned staff from the Activities Department).
  • Communicate with the Waseca County News and Waseca County Pioneer about upcoming performances.
  • Ensure that performances are advertised on social media (District, Waseca Drama Department, city Facebook pages, etc...).
