Overview / Responsibilities

Wood is seeking a Senior Manager Project Delivery - Mining & Minerals to manage the oversight of Project Delivery activities and governance of project performance for the Mining & Minerals sub business group (sBG). Project Delivery constitutes the Technical Functions for delivery of projects; Project Management, Project Controls, Engineering, Supply Chain (Project Procurement and Sub-Contracts) and Construction.

This is a key role within the organization, and will require an individual with a mining background, solid leadership abilities, strong Project Management experience and skills to drive the continuous improvement of processes and procedures with a goal to standardize project delivery execution. 

The successful candidate will have superior communication and interpersonal skills, along with a good understanding of projects, how to maximize the utilisation of high value engineering centres, and a desire to improve on processes. This position will report to the SVP Mining & Minerals, and will ideally be based in one of our Mining & Minerals offices which are in Vancouver, or Trail, BC, Saskatoon, SK, Oakville, ON in Canada, or it could be based in Johannesburg, S.A., Perth or Brisbane, AU, in Santiago, Chile or in Lima, Peru.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Delivery of BU/BG Project Delivery objectives and requirements within Mining
  • Develop and maintain any common Mining level Project Delivery processes and procedures in line with Wood policies and requirements
  • Develop and support consistency of Project Delivery systems and tools at the sub-BG level
  • Coordinate project governance  through internal monthly reporting and reviews
  • Support the business objective of delivery of projects vs contractual requirements and HSSE quality, cost, and schedule requirements, to deliver or improve upon as-sold margins
  • Drive HSSEA culture and performance
  • Support the Execution Centres as required with Project Execution and Delivery
  • Ensure clear processes / reviews for identification and management of project risk throughout the project lifecycle
  • Support the review and agreement of project execution philosophies and assurance plans as part of the tender review processes
  • Ensure that the project risk categorisation process is followed and documented centrally in collaboration with Operations Assurance
  • Approve project risk categorisation of projects where required
  • Monitor project performance via engagement, and review of monthly reports and dashboards
  • Manage intervention on projects including peer reviews, as well the provision of Dashboards to BG as directed by VP Project Delivery - BG
  • Act as sponsor for allocated projects and engage with clients as necessary
  • Provide support, as required, to the business development process to identify and win new work for the sub-BG businesses and region, and participate, as required, in the sub-BG level Lead Review Meeting (LRM) process for sub-BG to ensure the right delivery models for future prospects
  • Drive strengthening and deepening the use of HVEC operations (eg India) to maximise efficiency and profit for all projects
  • Provide leadership of Project Delivery Technical Functions for Mining & Minerals, including:
    • Support of resourcing, career development processes, competency management, training and succession planning for Project Delivery Technical Functions to facilitate getting the right resources on projects, and enhance execution outcomes
    • Facilitate the provision of critical role shortages for current and future prospects, and available resources
    • Facilitate networking of project delivery functions and other business unit functions to leverage expertise and peer support across the wider Wood business
Skills / Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, science or relevant discipline
  • Must have a minimum of 20 years of relevant project experience, including a minimum of 10 years as a project manager
  • Strong capital project execution experience, preferably in the Mining sector; leadership skills, strategic thinking; oral and written communication skills
  • Understanding of all Project Delivery Technical Functions; Project Management, Project Controls, Engineering, Supply Chain (Project Procurement and Sub-Contracts), Construction and Commissioning
  • Preference for P. Eng and PMP designations
  • Experienced in FEED, EPC, EPCM and PMC type Capital Projects
  • Experience and understanding of project management, and general project execution and delivery tools, processes and procedures, and problem solving
  • Broad understanding of the business drivers for mining clients
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work cross functionally and create trust with seniors and peer group
