What does a senior algorithm engineer do?

A Senior Algorithm Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and optimizing complex algorithms that solve technical problems or enhance product performance. They often work with large datasets, machine learning models, or mathematical techniques to create efficient solutions. In addition to coding, they may collaborate with cross-functional teams, review the work of junior engineers, and help set the technical direction for algorithm development projects. Their expertise ensures that products and systems run efficiently and accurately.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior algorithm engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Algorithm Engineer, you need advanced proficiency in mathematics, computer science, and algorithm design, usually supported by a relevant degree and extensive experience in the field. Expertise with programming languages such as Python or C++, proficiency with machine learning libraries, and familiarity with version control systems like Git are commonly required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly help set top candidates apart. These skills are crucial for developing robust, efficient solutions and collaborating effectively on challenging technical projects.

What are some common challenges faced by senior algorithm engineers when deploying algorithms into production environments?

Senior Algorithm Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring that algorithms are both scalable and efficient when integrated into real-time systems. Balancing model accuracy with computational resource constraints is a frequent task, as well as addressing data inconsistencies and managing version control for iterative algorithm updates. Collaboration with software engineers and data engineers is essential to ensure smooth deployment, monitor performance, and quickly resolve any production issues. Staying updated with the latest frameworks and best practices also helps in overcoming these challenges.

What is the difference between Senior Algorithm Engineer vs Data Scientist?

AspectSenior Algorithm EngineerData Scientist
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in CS, EE, or related; strong math and programming skillsBachelor's or Master's in CS, Statistics, or related; strong analytical and programming skills
Work EnvironmentDevelops algorithms for software, hardware, or embedded systems in tech companiesAnalyzes data to extract insights, often in tech, finance, or healthcare sectors
Industry UsageCommon in AI, robotics, and software developmentPrevalent in analytics, machine learning, and business intelligence

While both roles require strong programming and analytical skills, Senior Algorithm Engineers focus on designing and optimizing algorithms for technical systems, whereas Data Scientists analyze data to inform business decisions. The roles often overlap in AI and machine learning projects but serve different primary functions within organizations.

Job description

JOB PURPOSE
e2Companies is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to join the Research and Development team to support the advancement of next generation energy storage, high voltage power infrastructure, and integrated generation technologies. This role will work closely with senior technical leadership to support system architecture development, battery and protection strategy design, high voltage testing methodologies, and proprietary control and modeling platforms. The Senior Systems Engineer will contribute to both theoretical research and practical implementation, ensuring scalable system design, validation rigor, and long-term technical continuity. The ideal candidate brings strong academic grounding in power systems or electrochemical systems, combined with hands-on laboratory, modeling, and software development experience, and demonstrates readiness to assume increasing technical ownership within a growth-stage innovation environment.
This position requires full-time, on-site employment at our Bonita Springs, Florida headquarters. Relocation assistance is available for qualified candidates willing relocate to Southwest Florida.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Research and System Architecture
  • Lead and support research and development activities related to battery systems, high voltage insulation systems, and grid-interactive power architectures.
  • Evaluate system components and recommend architectures, formulations, and design modifications to meet product performance, safety, and lifecycle requirements.
  • Evaluate high energy active materials and cell architectures, integrating material selection and formulation into system-level performance objectives.
  • Conduct ongoing technical literature research to inform material selection, degradation modeling, and system design strategies.
  • Engage with suppliers and technology partners to evaluate emerging materials, components, and system integration strategies.
Battery and Laboratory Development
  • Specify and test prototype cells or subsystems, quantitatively analyzing performance to support design decisions.
  • Define, validate, and standardize laboratory test procedures, equipment configurations, and experimental protocols.
  • Design and execute laboratory validation programs including insulation testing and analysis, electromagnetic compatibility evaluation, and cycle life testing.
  • Apply diagnostics, failure mode, and contingency analysis to identify root causes of performance limitations and generate technically sound corrective solutions.
  • Champion environmental health and safety standards within laboratory and validation environments.
Modeling, Software, amp; Controls
  • Perform modeling and simulation of power systems, transient events, protection coordination, and degradation mechanisms using MATLAB or equivalent analytical tools.
  • Develop and maintain engineering software tools and internal platforms in C# to support system modeling, data analysis, automation, and algorithm implementation.
  • Contribute to control logic development and system-level algorithm design for energy storage and distributed generation platforms.
  • Collaboration, Leadership amp; Governance
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering and manufacturing teams to translate research findings into deployable, production-ready systems.
  • Mentor laboratory technicians and junior engineers to ensure high quality execution and technical understanding of experimental work.
  • Support technical documentation, validation reporting, intellectual property development, and structured knowledge transfer processes.
