Job description

Internship Opportunity

The Office of California Senator Jerry McNerney is looking for enthusiastic and motivated individuals to join our team. Interns will address key community issues to better serve all Californians. If you're interested in a challenging opportunity in a collaborative environment, we encourage you to apply.

Basic functions include general office duties under the direct supervision of the District Director, including monitoring and responding to the public inbox for the Member.

Duties include assisting with constituent services and casework as needed in a fast-paced, professional environment.

Position qualifications require strong oral and written communication skills, proficiency with Microsoft Office and PCs, and familiarity with legislative culture and process. Candidates must participate in the Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) Employee Pull Notice Program, complete a DMV Form INF 1101, and possess a valid California Driver's License with a clean driving record. Proof of liability insurance is also required.

This position is located in Stockton, CA and requires in-person attendance. The Senate's core business hours are 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. However, scheduling for interns may need to be more flexible depending on the office needs. Interns hired to work full-time or 35 hours per week must conclude their internship in three months or less. All paid internships must conclude within six months, unless the intern is working less than half-time (17.5 hours per week).

Interns who are under the age of 18 are only authorized to work remotely. Salary is $21 per hour. No benefits provided with this classification. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.

The District Office is currently accepting rolling applications for the following internship cohorts:

  • Session 1: March 15 – July 15
  • Session 2: August 1 – December 31

Applicants may apply at any time. Qualified candidates will be interviewed and selected on a rolling basis until each cohort is filled.

To apply, please visit the Senate Careers page at www.senate.ca.gov/senatejobs. A cover letter, resume, a 1-page writing sample, and references are required, in addition to the Senate application. If you are unable to complete the online application, please email all required documentation to the contact listed below.

Writing sample requirement: Submit a 1-page writing sample (approximately 350 words) in the form of a formal letter from the Member congratulating Jim Doe on their recognition of a local award. The letter should reflect professional tone, clarity, and appropriate constituent correspondence style. Please include at least two references, with contact information, who can speak to your work ethic, professionalism, or academic performance.

File naming convention: To ensure efficient review of applications, please save and upload all documents using the following format: FirstName_LastName_DocumentType. Examples:
