Semiconductor Testing information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in semiconductor testing?

To thrive in Semiconductor Testing, you need a strong background in electronics, semiconductor physics, and test engineering, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with automated test equipment (ATE), wafer probers, and software tools like LabVIEW or MATLAB, as well as certifications such as ISTQB, are commonly required. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are critical soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure accurate testing, quality assurance, and efficient troubleshooting in the fast-paced semiconductor industry.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in semiconductor testing, and how can they be addressed?

A frequent challenge in semiconductor testing is keeping up with rapidly evolving technology and increasingly complex integrated circuits. Test engineers must adapt to new testing protocols, advanced test equipment, and higher performance requirements. Effective collaboration with design and manufacturing teams helps address issues early, while ongoing training and process optimization can improve test coverage and efficiency. Staying current with industry trends and leveraging automation tools are also key to overcoming these challenges.

What is the difference between Semiconductor Testing vs Semiconductor Quality Assurance?

AspectSemiconductor TestingSemiconductor Quality Assurance
Primary FocusVerifying functionality and performance of semiconductor devicesEnsuring overall quality and compliance of semiconductor products
Work EnvironmentTest labs, production lines, testing equipmentQuality control departments, inspection facilities
Required CredentialsEngineering degrees, testing certificationsQuality management certifications, engineering background
Industry UsageUsed during manufacturing to identify defectsUsed to maintain standards and prevent defects

Semiconductor Testing focuses on verifying individual devices' functionality, while Semiconductor Quality Assurance ensures the overall quality and compliance of semiconductor products throughout production. Both roles are essential for delivering reliable semiconductor components.

Is it hard to get a job in semiconductor testing?

Securing a job in semiconductor testing can be competitive but is generally accessible to candidates with a background in electrical engineering, electronics, or related fields. Relevant skills include knowledge of testing equipment, troubleshooting, and sometimes certifications, with entry-level positions often requiring minimal experience and offering on-the-job training.

Job description

PIXCEL (https://www.pixcel.com) develops novel semiconductor-based photonic modules aimed at sensing and imaging applications.

What you'll do:

You will be responsible for supporting the assembly, testing, characterization, and troubleshooting of optical and electronic systems used in PIXCEL's photonic modules. You will:

You will:

  • Assemble and integrate optical and electronic components, including photonic devices, detectors, lasers, fiber-optic components, PCBs, connectors, and associated hardware.
  • Perform optical alignment and characterization using equipment such as optical power meters, light sources, microscopes, spectrometers, and other laboratory instrumentation.
  • Build, modify, and test prototype optical and electronic assemblies in a laboratory environment.
  • Perform electrical testing and troubleshooting of circuits, cables, connectors, sensors, and electronic assemblies using oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies, and other test equipment.
  • Follow detailed test procedures and record measurements, test results, and observations accurately and consistently.
  • Diagnose optical and electrical faults at the component and system level, working systematically to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
  • Support engineers during prototype development, system bring-up, environmental testing, and product characterization.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment, test fixtures, optical benches, and electronic test setups to ensure they remain calibrated, organized, and ready for use.
  • Work closely with optical, electrical, mechanical, and software engineers to assemble and test integrated photonic systems.

Who you'll work with:

You will be part of a multi-disciplinary start-up team, including optical, electrical, mechanical, and software engineers. You will work closely with PIXCEL's silicon photonics development leads, supporting the development and testing of next-generation photonic modules. The position is based in Matawan, NJ.

Who you are:

You are a hands-on technician who enjoys working with both optical and electronic hardware. You are comfortable working in a laboratory environment and have a methodical approach to assembly, measurement, testing, and troubleshooting.

You enjoy understanding how things work and are able to follow a problem through from an initial observation to its root cause. You take pride in producing accurate, repeatable work and carefully documenting your results.

You are comfortable working independently when given a defined task, but you also enjoy working closely with engineers and contributing to a collaborative team environment. You are enthusiastic about learning new technologies and developing your skills in optics, electronics, and photonics.

Minimum requirements:

  • Hands-on experience working with electronic hardware, laboratory equipment, or electro-optical systems.
  • Practical experience using electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes, digital multimeters, bench power supplies, and signal generators.
  • Experience assembling, testing, modifying, or troubleshooting PCBs, cables, connectors, and electronic assemblies.
  • Familiarity with optical laboratory equipment and basic optical measurement techniques, such as optical power measurement, fiber handling, optical alignment, and microscope inspection.
  • Ability to read and interpret electronic schematics, wiring diagrams, mechanical drawings, and technical documentation.
  • Strong soldering and rework skills, including the ability to work with small electronic components and connectors.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to accurately record test data, measurements, and observations.
  • Ability to troubleshoot hardware systematically and identify potential component, assembly, wiring, optical, or test-equipment issues.
  • Experience working in a laboratory, manufacturing, R&D, electronics, optics, photonics, or semiconductor environment is preferred.
  • Familiarity with fiber-optic components, lasers, photodetectors, optical alignment systems, or silicon photonics is a plus.
We may use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support parts of the hiring process, such as reviewing applications, analyzing resumes, or assessing responses and identifying potential inconsistencies or verification signals in application materials based on available information. These tools assist our recruitment team but do not replace human judgment. Final hiring decisions are ultimately made by humans. If you would like more information about how your data is processed, please contact us.
