What is the difference between Semiconductor Packaging Engineer vs Test Engineer?

AspectSemiconductor Packaging EngineerTest Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, or related fields; certifications like IPC or SEMIBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, or related fields; certifications in testing standards
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, manufacturing facilities, cleanroomsTesting labs, production lines, quality assurance departments
Industry UsageSemiconductor manufacturing, electronics companiesElectronics manufacturing, semiconductor companies

Semiconductor Packaging Engineers focus on designing and developing packaging solutions to protect and connect semiconductor devices, while Test Engineers concentrate on testing and validating semiconductor products to ensure quality and performance. Both roles are essential in the semiconductor industry and often collaborate during product development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Semiconductor Packaging Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Semiconductor Packaging Engineer, you need a strong background in materials science, mechanical or electrical engineering, and semiconductor manufacturing processes, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency with CAD tools, simulation software (such as ANSYS or COMSOL), and familiarity with industry standards like JEDEC are essential. Critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective teamwork are standout soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure the development of reliable, high-performance semiconductor packages that meet demanding industry requirements.

What does a Semiconductor Packaging Engineer do?

A Semiconductor Packaging Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and implementing the enclosures (or 'packages') that protect semiconductor devices and enable their integration into electronic systems. They work on selecting materials, ensuring thermal management, and optimizing electrical performance while maintaining the integrity and reliability of the chip. These engineers collaborate with cross-functional teams to improve packaging processes and address challenges like miniaturization and high-speed performance. Their work is critical to the performance and durability of modern electronic products.

What are some common challenges Semiconductor Packaging Engineers face in ensuring product reliability?

Semiconductor Packaging Engineers often encounter challenges related to thermal management, material compatibility, and miniaturization. Ensuring that packages effectively dissipate heat while maintaining electrical integrity is critical to product reliability. Additionally, engineers must carefully select materials and design structures that withstand mechanical and environmental stresses, all while meeting increasingly stringent size and performance requirements. Collaboration with design, manufacturing, and quality assurance teams is essential to address these challenges and deliver robust solutions.

Job description

Staff Civil Engineer

Redwood Materials is seeking an experienced Staff Civil Engineer to serve as a senior individual contributor on our internal EPC Infrastructure Engineering team. In this role, you will independently deliver civil design and engineering across our battery manufacturing, recycling, and BESS infrastructure projects - managing work through all phases from planning and design through bid and construction. You will partner closely with internal multi-disciplinary teams and external consultants to produce coordinated, code-compliant designs that support Redwood's mission of building a sustainable circular economy for lithium-ion batteries and battery energy storage systems.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage multiple civil engineering projects throughout planning, design, bid, and construction phases, including BMC1 sitewide infrastructure, plant projects, and off-site BESS deployments
  • Independently develop high-quality civil engineering deliverables including construction documents, drawings, specifications, narratives, and calculations in conformance with IBC, ASCE 7, and local jurisdictional requirements
  • Proactively communicate project needs, changes, schedule, and status to internal stakeholders and external team members
  • Review drawings and proposals by vendors, engineers, and architects, and drive multi-disciplinary coordination across structural, mechanical, electrical, fire protection, and I&C
  • Manage external civil engineering consultants including scope of work, deliverables, and budget, and guide consultant designs through project completion
  • Perform constructability reviews, support permitting and agency coordination with Storey County and other AHJs, and resolve civil RFIs and field changes during construction
  • Ensure compliance with company engineering processes, applicable codes and standards, and regulatory and safety requirements across all design deliverables

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline; advanced degree preferred
  • Registered Professional Engineer (PE); Nevada licensure required or obtainable via comity within 2 months of hire
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience designing and building high-tech/industrial infrastructure and operational facilities (semiconductor, solar, battery, manufacturing, etc.) or battery energy storage system deployments
  • Experience in civil engineering design including stormwater management plans (flood control and water quality), SWPPPs, heavy civil, wastewater, and manufacturing/industrial operational construction
  • Site development background with experience designing roadways, grading, pavements, sanitary sewer, storm drainage, domestic and fire water main systems, erosion and sediment control, and traffic plans
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and hydrology/stormwater management software
  • Working knowledge of IBC, ASCE 7, and NFPA with the ability to quickly research local jurisdictional requirements
  • Ability to conduct, document, and stamp engineering calculations and design packages applying established procedures and safety requirements
  • Ability to manage external civil consultants through all project phases including scope, schedule, deliverables, and budget
  • Ability to juggle multiple concurrent projects and competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment; travel up to 10% between Nevada plant sites
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with multi-disciplinary teams, external consultants, contractors, and AHJs
