How much do semiconductor lab technician jobs pay per hour?

As of Sep 13, 2026, the average hourly pay for semiconductor lab technician in the United States is $22.53, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $18.27 and $24.28 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does a semiconductor lab technician do?

A Semiconductor Lab Technician assists in the fabrication, testing, and analysis of semiconductor devices and materials. They operate specialized equipment, monitor production processes, and ensure that products meet quality standards. Their work supports engineers and scientists in developing and improving microchips and other electronic components used in everyday technology. Technicians often work in cleanroom environments and must follow strict safety and contamination protocols.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a semiconductor lab technician?

To thrive as a Semiconductor Lab Technician, you need a solid background in electronics, physics, and semiconductor processing, usually supported by an associate’s degree in a related field. Familiarity with cleanroom protocols, wafer fabrication equipment, and measurement tools like scanning electron microscopes is crucial, along with certifications such as OSHA safety training. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and strong teamwork skills help technicians excel in a precise and collaborative environment. These skills ensure accurate device fabrication, minimize costly errors, and support innovation in semiconductor manufacturing.

What are some common challenges semiconductor lab technicians face when working with delicate equipment and materials?

Semiconductor Lab Technicians often work with highly sensitive equipment and materials that require precise handling and adherence to strict cleanliness protocols. One common challenge is maintaining a contaminant-free environment, as even microscopic particles can compromise device performance. Technicians must also troubleshoot complex machinery and adapt to rapidly changing technology, which requires continuous learning and attention to detail. Effective communication with engineers and other team members is essential to ensure smooth workflow and quick resolution of technical issues.

What is the difference between Semiconductor Lab Technician vs Semiconductor Process Engineer?

AspectSemiconductor Lab TechnicianSemiconductor Process Engineer
CredentialsAssociate degree or technical certificationBachelor's or higher in engineering or related field
Work EnvironmentLaboratory setting, hands-on testing and equipment operationDesign, development, and optimization of manufacturing processes
Employer & Industry UsageManufacturers, research labs, and fabrication facilitiesSemiconductor companies, R&D departments, and production plants

Semiconductor Lab Technicians focus on hands-on testing, equipment operation, and quality control within labs, often requiring technical certifications. In contrast, Semiconductor Process Engineers develop and improve manufacturing processes, typically holding higher degrees and engaging in process design and optimization. Both roles are essential in the semiconductor industry but differ in responsibilities and educational requirements.

How much does a semiconductor lab technician make?

The average salary for a semiconductor lab technician is around $50,000 to $70,000 per year, depending on experience, certifications, and the specific employer. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced technicians with specialized skills can earn higher wages. Compensation often includes benefits such as health insurance and paid time off.

Is it hard to get a job in semiconductor labs?

Securing a position as a semiconductor lab technician can be competitive, often requiring relevant education such as an associate's or bachelor's degree in engineering, physics, or related fields. Candidates typically need skills in cleanroom procedures, equipment operation, and sometimes certifications like IPC or ISO standards; experience with tools like microscopes and test equipment is also beneficial.
