How much do semiconductor chemist jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 21, 2026, the average hourly pay for semiconductor chemist in the United States is $30.99, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $24.04 and $35.58 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does a semiconductor chemist do?

A Semiconductor Chemist specializes in researching, developing, and testing chemical materials and processes used in the production of semiconductor devices, such as microchips and transistors. They work to design and optimize materials that improve the performance, reliability, and efficiency of electronic components. Their role often involves collaborating with engineers and materials scientists to solve complex challenges in fabrication and ensure quality control throughout manufacturing.

What are some common challenges semiconductor chemists face when working on process development in the fabrication of microchips?

Semiconductor Chemists often encounter challenges such as maintaining the purity and consistency of chemical materials, ensuring compatibility with advanced fabrication technologies, and adapting processes to meet continually shrinking device geometries. Collaborating closely with engineers and production teams, they must troubleshoot issues like contamination or yield loss, which requires a deep understanding of both chemical properties and semiconductor processes. Staying current with rapidly evolving industry standards and integrating new materials or methods also present ongoing learning opportunities and challenges.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a semiconductor chemist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Semiconductor Chemist, you need a strong background in chemistry, materials science, and semiconductor processing, usually supported by a relevant degree (such as chemistry, chemical engineering, or materials science). Familiarity with analytical instruments (like SEM, XPS, and FTIR), cleanroom protocols, and statistical process control systems is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure precise material development, reliable quality control, and successful collaboration in the fast-evolving semiconductor industry.

What is the difference between Semiconductor Chemist vs Materials Scientist?

AspectSemiconductor ChemistMaterials Scientist
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Chemistry, Materials Science, or related fieldBachelor's or Master's in Materials Science, Chemistry, or Physics
Work EnvironmentLaboratories focused on semiconductor materials and device fabricationResearch labs, manufacturing, or academia across various materials
Employer & IndustrySemiconductor manufacturing companies, electronics industryElectronics, aerospace, automotive, and research sectors
Search & Comparison IntentYesYes

Semiconductor Chemists specialize in developing and testing materials specifically for semiconductor devices, focusing on silicon and compound semiconductors. Materials Scientists have a broader scope, working with various materials to improve properties for multiple industries. While both roles require similar educational backgrounds and work environments, Semiconductor Chemists focus more on electronic applications, whereas Materials Scientists have a wider range of applications.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for a practical, creative, and highly motivated Chemist or Chemical Engineer to join our Research & Development team. This is a hands-on position focused on the development and optimization of electroplating chemistries, materials, and processes for semiconductor and advanced packaging applications.

The successful candidate will conduct experimental research, develop new chemistry and process concepts, and apply electrochemical, analytical, and data-driven approaches to solve technical challenges. The candidate will work closely with R&D scientists, application engineers, product management, and other cross-functional teams to support the development and commercialization of new products.

What will you be doing?
  • Maintain the highest standards of safety and actively contribute to a strong laboratory safety culture.
  • Conduct hands-on electroplating chemistry and process development, including formulation, plating experiments, sample preparation, characterization, and data analysis.
  • Develop and optimize electroplating technologies for semiconductor and advanced packaging applications, including TSV, RDL, damascene, hybrid bonding, and other emerging applications.
  • Apply fundamental electrochemistry and materials science to understand plating mechanisms, chemistry interactions, feature filling, deposit properties, and process performance.
  • Design and execute systematic experiments and DOE to optimize chemistry formulations and process conditions.
  • Utilize statistical analysis, data analytics, automation, and AI-assisted tools, where appropriate, to accelerate experimentation, data interpretation, and R&D productivity.
