What does a Selenium Python QA tester do?

A Selenium Python QA Tester is responsible for designing, developing, and executing automated test scripts using Selenium WebDriver with Python. Their main goal is to ensure the quality and functionality of software applications by identifying bugs and verifying that new features work as intended. They work closely with developers and other QA team members to create test plans, analyze results, and report defects. This role requires a good understanding of both software development and testing methodologies, as well as proficiency in Python programming.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Selenium Python QA tester?

To thrive as a Selenium Python QA Tester, you need a solid grasp of software testing concepts, hands-on experience with Selenium WebDriver, and proficiency in Python programming. Familiarity with test automation frameworks (like PyTest or Robot Framework), version control systems (such as Git), and CI/CD tools is typically required, and certifications like ISTQB can be advantageous. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help testers identify issues and collaborate with development teams. These skills ensure robust test coverage, efficient automation, and high-quality software releases.

What are some common challenges Selenium Python QA testers face when automating web application tests, and how can these be overcome?

Selenium Python QA Testers often encounter challenges such as dealing with dynamic web elements, handling synchronization issues, and maintaining test scripts as applications evolve. To overcome these, testers typically use explicit waits to ensure elements are ready for interaction, implement robust locators, and modularize scripts for easier updates. Effective collaboration with developers and regular code reviews also help in quickly adapting to UI changes and maintaining test reliability.

  • Review Business Requirements Documents (BRDs) and map requirements to testable acceptance criteria.
  • Identify requirement gaps, ambiguities, and potential quality risks before development begins.
  • Maintain a Requirements Traceability Matrix (RTM) linking BRD requirements, test cases, and test results.
  • Participate in BRD walkthroughs, requirement reviews, and stakeholder sign-off meetings.
  • Design and execute end-to-end tests covering the complete data pipeline from source systems through Databricks/Snowflake transformations to dashboard UI.
  • Validate data accuracy across Databricks Unity Catalog schemas.
  • Develop and execute SQL-based data validation scripts.
  • Build Python-based data quality and regression frameworks using Great Expectations, Deequ, or custom frameworks.
  • Validate data completeness, referential integrity, schema evolution, and data consistency across raw and curated layers.
  • Develop scalable automation frameworks using Python, Playwright, and Selenium WebDriver.
  • Perform functional, integration, regression, and end-to-end testing.
  • Conduct comprehensive REST and GraphQL API testing.
  • Validate API contracts including request/response schemas, status codes, headers, authentication, and authorization.
  • Use tools such as Bruno, Postman, Requests, HTTPX, and Swagger/OpenAPI for API validation and automation.
  • Test authentication and authorization workflows, including token validation, role-based access, and session management.
  • Validate API error handling, malformed payloads, rate limiting, timeout behavior, and 4xx/5xx responses.
  • Perform API performance and load testing using Locust, k6, or JMeter.
  • Validate API versioning, backward compatibility, and deprecation scenarios.
  • Automate API contract testing within CI/CD pipelines to identify breaking changes before deployment.
  • Validate consistency between API responses and underlying Databricks/SQL query results.
  • Track defects through resolution and ensure requirements are fully validated with no escaped defects.
  • Collaborate with developers, business stakeholders, data engineers, and other QA teams in a global delivery environment.
