Selenium Playwright information

What are Selenium and Playwright?

Selenium and Playwright are both popular open-source tools used for automating web browser interactions. Selenium has been widely adopted for years and supports multiple programming languages and browsers, making it a staple for web automation and testing. Playwright, developed by Microsoft, is a newer tool that offers fast, reliable browser automation with support for multiple browsers and advanced features like multi-page scenarios and network interception. Both tools are commonly used for end-to-end testing of web applications.

How do Selenium Playwright automation engineers typically collaborate with developers and QA teams during a project?

Selenium Playwright automation engineers play a key role in bridging the gap between development and quality assurance teams. They often work closely with developers to understand new features and ensure test scripts align with application updates. Collaboration with QA involves sharing automated test results, identifying defects, and refining test coverage to enhance software reliability. Regular communication and participation in agile ceremonies, like sprint planning and daily stand-ups, help ensure the automation suite remains effective and up-to-date throughout the development lifecycle.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Selenium Playwright automation engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Selenium Playwright automation engineer, you need a solid background in programming (typically Python, JavaScript, or Java), test automation, and experience with Selenium and Playwright frameworks. Familiarity with CI/CD tools (like Jenkins or GitHub Actions), version control systems (such as Git), and test management platforms is often required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help in debugging complex issues and collaborating with development teams. These skills ensure reliable test automation, improved software quality, and efficient delivery cycles.

What is the difference between Selenium Playwright vs Cypress Automation Engineer?

FeatureSelenium PlaywrightCypress Automation Engineer
Testing FocusCross-browser web testingEnd-to-end testing for web apps
Supported LanguagesJavaScript, Python, C#, JavaJavaScript
Work EnvironmentMultiple browsers, cloud testingBrowser-based, primarily Chrome
UsageWidespread in enterprise and cross-browser testingPopular in frontend development teams

Both Selenium Playwright and Cypress Automation Engineer roles involve web testing, but Playwright offers broader browser support and language options, making it suitable for diverse testing environments. Cypress is more focused on JavaScript and Chrome-based testing, often preferred for frontend development. The choice depends on project requirements and preferred tools.

Job description

Company Description

WHO WE ARE

Velotic is a newly formed independent software company with a pure-play focus on industrial operations. We unite two category-defining portfolios -- ThingWorx and Kepware (formerly part of PTC) and Proficy (formerly part of GE Vernova) -- to transform industrial manufacturing, at scale. With $350M in annual revenue, a global footprint across a range of industries, a legacy customer base, and our intelligent data connectivity systems and AI solutions, we are one of the world's largest independent software companies focused on industrial operations -- here to power the future of manufacturing.

OUR MISSION

Enabling the world's industrial producers to do the right things right—across every shift, every plant, every day. We help manufacturers prosper by equipping them with software-defined, data-driven production systems that elevate quality, accelerate cycle times, improve resilience, and enable sustainable profit growth.

Job Description

WHY THIS IS A ONCE-IN-A-CAREER OPPORTUNITY

  • Lead in a market undergoing significant disruption and growth from cloud migration to edge intelligence to AI-powered industrial automation.
  • Join a culture defined by ambition, authenticity, speed, teamwork, and the belief that manufacturing can meaningfully improve the world.
  • Competitive benefits, compensation and long-term impact on how the world’s industrial companies operate, automate, and innovate.

ROLE SUMMARY

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Quality Assurance Engineer to lead our quality initiatives and ensure the delivery of high-performing, reliable software. As a key member of our engineering team, you will not only design and execute complex testing strategies but also act as a mentor, process advocate, and architectural advisor. You will be instrumental in evolving our automated testing frameworks and fostering a "quality-first" culture across the entire development lifecycle.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Strategy and Test Architecture

  • Test Planning: Designing comprehensive test strategies for complex features, ensuring full coverage across unit, integration, system, and regression testing.
  • Automation Framework Development: Designing and maintaining robust automation frameworks from scratch, selecting the right tools (e.g., Playwright, FlaUI, Protractor, RestAssured, Selenium, Playwright etc) that align with the company’s tech stack.
  • CI/CD Integration: Working on the DevOps tasks to integrate automated testing into the Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment pipelines to ensure "quality at speed."
  • Test lab management: Upkeep of all the test environments (on premise and cloud). Managing the security patching on the test deployments.

2. Technical Execution

  • Risk Analysis: Performing deep-dive risk assessments to identify which parts of the application are most prone to failure and prioritizing testing efforts accordingly.
  • Performance and Security Testing: Moving beyond functional testing to oversee or perform non-functional testing, including load testing, stress testing, and basic security vulnerability assessment.
  • Root Cause Analysis: Investigating complex production issues to understand why bugs escaped the testing cycle and implementing safeguards to prevent recurrence.

 3. Leadership and Mentorship

  • Mentoring: Coaching junior engineers on best practices, code quality, and testing methodologies.
  • Process Improvement: Identifying bottlenecks in the software development lifecycle (SDLC) and proposing process improvements (such as shifting left - testing earlier in the development cycle).
  • Advocacy: Acting as a "Quality Champion" within the organization, promoting a culture where quality is a shared responsibility among developers, product managers, and designers.

4. Collaboration and Communication

  • Requirement Analysis: Participating in design and architecture meetings early in the process to identify logical flaws or edge cases before code is even written.
  • Stakeholder Reporting: Translating technical quality metrics (e.g., defect density, test coverage, pass/fail rates) into actionable insights for product managers and stakeholders.
Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Programming Skills: Proficiency in at least one object-oriented language (e.g., Python, JavaScript/TypeScript) to build and maintain complex automation frameworks.
  • Automation Frameworks: Expertise in industry-standard tools. Experience developing automated tests for Windows based applications is highly preferred.
    • Web: Selenium, Playwright, or FlaUI.
    • API: Postman, REST Assured, or PyTest.
  • CI/CD Knowledge: Practical experience with pipelines (e.g., Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI).
  • Infrastructure & Cloud: Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) to simulate production-like testing environments.
  • Metrics-Driven Mindset: Experience defining and tracking KPIs such as Mean Time to Detect (MTTD), Mean Time to Resolve (MTTR), and defect leakage rates to demonstrate the ROI of the QA team.
  • Agile/Scrum Experience: Strong background working in iterative environments, including participation in sprint planning, grooming, and retrospectives.
  • Industrial Automation Domain: Experience with SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) application and PLC devices REQUIRED.

Education & Experience

•  Bachelor’s degree in computer science or in “STEM” Majors (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math)

• A minimum of 6 years of professional experience

WORK ENVIRONMENT

• Hybrid

• No travel needs.
