What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Select Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Select Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, analytical problem-solving, and typically a degree in a relevant engineering discipline. Familiarity with industry-specific software (such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or MATLAB) and certifications like PE (Professional Engineer) are often required. Strong project management, collaboration, and communication skills help you stand out in coordinating with cross-functional teams and stakeholders. These skills ensure efficient project execution, innovation, and adherence to safety and quality standards in engineering environments.

What are some typical challenges Select Engineers face when working with cross-functional teams?

Select Engineers often collaborate with professionals from departments like procurement, project management, and field operations. One common challenge is aligning technical requirements with budgetary and timeline constraints set by other teams. Effective communication and flexibility are crucial to ensuring that engineering solutions meet both operational needs and project goals. Additionally, Select Engineers may need to mediate differing priorities and ensure that all stakeholders are informed throughout the decision-making process.

What are Select Engineers?

Select Engineers are professionals who specialize in selecting and specifying equipment, materials, and systems for engineering projects, typically within the oil, gas, and energy industries. Their primary role is to evaluate project requirements and recommend the most appropriate technical solutions during the early or 'select' phase of a project. They work closely with project managers, clients, and other engineering disciplines to ensure that chosen options meet safety, cost, and operational criteria. Select Engineers help lay the groundwork for successful project execution by making informed decisions that guide subsequent design and construction phases.

What is the difference between Select Engineering vs Mechanical Engineering?

AspectSelect EngineeringMechanical Engineering
Required CredentialsAssociate's or Bachelor's degree in select engineering fields, certifications varyBachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, optional professional licensure
Work EnvironmentLaboratories, manufacturing plants, technical settingsFactories, design offices, research labs
Industry UsageManufacturing, quality control, technical supportDesign, analysis, and manufacturing of mechanical systems

While both Select Engineering and Mechanical Engineering involve technical skills and work in industrial environments, Select Engineering typically focuses on specific technical or trade skills, often requiring less formal education. Mechanical Engineering is broader, emphasizing design and analysis of mechanical systems, usually requiring a bachelor's degree. Understanding these differences helps job seekers choose the right career path based on their education and interests.

Job description

Position Description:
This position focuses on Mechanical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering Design within the commercial, healthcare and federal HVAC design areas.
The Engineer will be responsible for supporting and assisting with the engineering development and design of mechanical, plumbing, and fire protection construction documents associated with new buildings and renovations for consulting design projects, design-build projects, and performance contract projects. The Engineer should have a keen understanding of Mechanical Engineering Design and the design of improvements for large scale, commercial and federal HVAC systems. With supervision, the Engineer will work under the direction of the Manager/Engineer from project conception through construction completion. Associated responsibilities include but are not limited to engineering design and drafting activities, specification writing support, cost estimating, limited field investigations and construction site visits, support of HVAC load calculations and modeling, hydraulic calculations, and coordination with others. Duties also include performing site visits, supporting energy savings calculations, and developing cost budgets and written descriptions of energy conservation measures.
Responsibilities:
  • Assist in the design of mechanical, plumbing and fire protection systems for new and renovated building construction on consulting that will be constructed by the Owner's contractor.
  • Assist in the design and construction of mechanical, plumbing, and fire protection systems for building retrofit construction on design-build projects.
  • Support the studies and analyses of mechanical and plumbing systems documenting the conditions, presenting cost effective solutions, and generating reports with recommendations.
  • Conduct code research in support of project development. Research and apply current technology and stay abreast of new and upcoming technologies.
  • Develop and use working knowledge of central plants, HVAC, chillers, boilers, air handlers, variable speed drives, motors, etc. for project development.
  • Perform/attend job site visits to verify and document existing construction conditions and to observe and document the contractor's work.
  • Assist with select engineering calculations for equipment and systems sizing. Perform building cooling and heating load calculations and energy use using computer modelling programs such as HAP, Trace, Energy Gauge Summit, ASHRAE Modified Bin Analysis.
  • Assist with the energy audit walk-thrus of facilities to document existing conditions and identify retrofit opportunities for energy conservation.

EDUCATION:
  • Undergraduate (BS) degree in mechanical or related engineering.
EXPERIENCE:
  • Engineer I requires MEP (HVAC) Design experience and must demonstrate relative experience and the aptitude to quickly learn the requirements of the position.
  • Over 2 years of experience in mechanical design-build projects is preferred.
  • Familiarity with LEED and green building design is preferred.
  • Experience in energy analysis to identify and develop energy conservation measures for PC and design build projects is preferred.

JOB SKILLS:
  • Able to interact effectively across organisational boundaries to achieve goals and meet deadlines.
  • Familiarity with building mechanical systems.
  • Good leadership, verbal, written and interpersonal skills.
  • Engineering, analytical and technical writing skills with attention to detail.
  • Skilful with computer software including word processing and spreadsheet analyses.
  • Building energy use modelling and simulation experience is desirable (e.g. eQUEST, HAP, DOE2, Trane Trace, ASHRAE Modified Bin Analysis).
  • AutoCAD experience required.

TRAVEL:
  • Travel up to 30% of time with multiple overnight trips.
