How much do seismic survey jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 17, 2026, the average hourly pay for seismic survey in the United States is $20.01, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $15.38 and $27.16 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a seismic survey?

A Seismic Survey job involves using specialized equipment to send sound waves into the ground and analyze their reflections to map underground structures. These surveys help locate oil, gas, and mineral deposits or assess geological formations for construction and environmental studies. Workers in this field operate seismic equipment, place sensors, and process data to create subsurface images. The job often requires travel to remote locations and work in challenging conditions.

What does a typical workweek look like for someone in a seismic survey role?

A typical workweek for a Seismic Survey professional often involves a mix of fieldwork and office-based tasks. In the field, you may be setting up and monitoring seismic equipment, collecting geophysical data, and troubleshooting technical issues, frequently working as part of a small, collaborative team. Office time is usually dedicated to processing and interpreting data, preparing reports, and planning future surveys. The role can require travel and sometimes working in remote locations, so adaptability and readiness for varying work environments are important. This balance offers valuable hands-on experience and the opportunity to directly contribute to projects critical to energy, construction, or environmental sectors.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the seismic survey position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Seismic Survey role, you need a solid background in geophysics or earth sciences, strong analytical skills, and familiarity with field data collection techniques. Experience with seismic data acquisition systems, GPS equipment, and relevant software such as GIS or specialized seismic processing tools is often required. Excellent teamwork, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are vital soft skills for success in dynamic field environments. These competencies ensure safe, accurate, and efficient data collection and interpretation, which are critical for exploration and environmental studies.
