Segment Manager information

What does a segment manager do?

A Segment Manager is responsible for overseeing and driving the growth of a specific market segment within a company. They analyze market trends, identify opportunities, develop strategies, and coordinate with sales, marketing, and product teams to meet business objectives for their targeted segment. Their role involves understanding customer needs, monitoring competitors, and ensuring that the company's offerings remain competitive and relevant. Segment Managers play a key role in shaping the direction of product development and go-to-market strategies for their assigned segment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a segment manager, and why are they important?

To excel as a Segment Manager, you need strong analytical abilities, market segmentation expertise, and a background in business or marketing, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with CRM platforms, data analysis tools, and industry-specific software is typically required. Outstanding communication, leadership, and strategic thinking are vital soft skills for building relationships and driving results. These capabilities enable effective management of targeted market segments, ensuring business growth and competitive advantage.

How does a segment manager typically collaborate with sales and product teams to drive business growth?

Segment Managers work closely with both sales and product teams to ensure that market strategies are aligned with customer needs and company objectives. They often analyze market data and customer feedback to identify growth opportunities within their designated segment. Regular meetings and cross-functional projects are common, allowing Segment Managers to share insights, refine product offerings, and support sales initiatives. This collaborative approach helps ensure the business effectively targets and serves key customer groups, driving revenue and market share.

Job description

We are driven to do more. More for our customers and the financial professionals who offer our products. If you are driven to do more and love the challenge of pursuing more, Athene is your kind of company. You will find we offer more than the basics to create an inclusive and dynamic work environment at our various locations.

Purpose

As Athene scales its businesses, the ability to deliver the right message to the right audience at the right time has become a critical driver of customer engagement and growth. Athene is seeking a Marketing Automation Manager to contribute to the marketing technology strategy that makes this possible, with significant ownership of Salesforce Data Cloud and Marketing Cloud. This leader will manage a team that builds scalable, AI-enabled programs for personalized customer engagement, collaborating across Marketing, Sales, and IT to strengthen segmentation, journey orchestration, and campaign performance. You'll shape how a growing retirement and insurance business connects with its customers, while developing talent and contributing to a culture grounded in Athene's BEAM values. Through Athene's relationship with Apollo, you'll also operate within a differentiated retirement services and investment ecosystem focused on innovation, growth, and helping customers achieve greater retirement security.

Accountabilities
  • Lead the implementation, governance, and optimization of Athene's marketing automation ecosystem, including Salesforce Marketing Cloud and Salesforce Data Cloud (Data360), enabling scalable, personalized customer journeys across distribution channels.
  • Serve as a key business owner for Salesforce Data Cloud, partnering with Marketing, Sales, IT, and Data teams on data architecture, identity resolution, audience segmentation, activation, governance, and ongoing platform improvement.
  • Develop and optimize innovative, AI-enabled marketing programs, using customer data, audience segmentation, content generation, testing, analytics, and automation to strengthen engagement, lead nurturing, lifecycle marketing, and campaign performance.
  • Lead and develop a high-performing Marketing Automation team through Athene's People-Centered Leadership approach - empowering others, fostering inclusion and trust, developing talent, encouraging experimentation, and promoting accountability and a risk-aware culture.
  • Partner with cross-functional stakeholders to prioritize marketing technology initiatives, translate business needs into scalable solutions, evaluate emerging capabilities, and deliver measurable business outcomes with a bias for action.
  • Establish effective measurement and continuous-improvement practices, using campaign analytics, A/B testing, AI-enabled insights, and critical thinking to identify opportunities, learn quickly, and improve customer experiences while maintaining appropriate regulatory and data-governance standards.
Qualifications and Experience
  • 3+ years of relevant experience, including 2+ years of formal or informal leadership, with experience in marketing, marketing automation, marketing operations, marketing technology, or relevant professional experience, preferred.
  • Experience implementing and optimizing enterprise marketing technology platforms such as Salesforce Marketing Cloud, Salesforce Data Cloud (Data360), Marketo, Pardot, HubSpot, or comparable solutions, with knowledge of CRM integration, customer segmentation, personalization, and journey orchestration.
  • Strong technical, analytical, and problem-solving capabilities, with experience in areas such as Salesforce CRM, customer data architecture, identity resolution, campaign analytics, A/B testing, project leadership, and AI-enabled marketing technologies.
  • Experience with tools such as Journey Builder, Automation Studio, Contact Builder, AMPscript, SSJS, HTML/CSS, SQL, Tableau, or Power BI is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop others, influence cross-functional partners, adapt in a fast-moving environment, and translate complex business needs into practical solutions.
  • Experience working within financial services, insurance, or another regulated environment is preferred.
  • Salesforce Marketing Cloud, Salesforce Data Cloud, or related certifications are preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Business, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent experience; advanced degree preferred.
