These jobs are often seasonal and require physical labor, such as walking fields to remove tassels, sorting seeds, or operating machinery. Workers may be employed by seed companies or farmers to ensure high-quality seed production. It is a great opportunity for students or temporary workers looking to gain experience in agriculture.
A typical workday for a Seed Corn Production Specialist involves overseeing field operations, monitoring crop progress, and ensuring the implementation of optimal planting, detasseling, and harvesting techniques. You may spend time collaborating with agronomists, equipment operators, and farm managers to troubleshoot issues and maintain crop quality standards. Much of the role is hands-on, requiring you to regularly inspect fields and document data using specialized software. During peak seasons, extended hours and adapting to changing weather conditions are common, but the work is dynamic and offers the satisfaction of managing crops from planting through harvest.

The seed technician is an individual that will understand all aspects of seed production. It can consist of seed conditioning, cleaning, grading, and overall maintenance work in the conditioning facility. It can include outside work from spring through fall to help implement the procedures of planting, inspecting, detasseling, male row destruction, and harvesting of the seed crop. This position can include shift work, weekends, and holidays during critical times if necessary. The individual should have a good mechanical aptitude. The individual must be able to work together with others, yet when asked, have the ability to complete tasks on their own and on time.
